Trouble With The Church I

The entire day was spent sitting around doing nothing. It was a waste of valuable time but there wasn't much Kies was allowed to do. They had to wait for tonight so that they could get their new orders after everything that happened. To kill time, Kies played the rock stacking game with Jasyeu and found out that it was a lot more difficult than it looked. The stones weren't smooth and had bumps and jags all over. He now understood why Jasyeu wasn't able to get more than three stones on top of each other.

"How did Falte get so many..." Kies quietly asked himself. He somehow stacked fifteen of them on top of each other without the tower toppling over. The highest he could do was four and even that was because he was only using the smoothest ones. After that, it was difficult to place the fifth one since after the third one the remaining stones were all very rough and jagged.

Jasyeu had him beat by around more than double his number. While he could only do five at most, Jasyeu had practiced to the point where she could get eleven of them into a tower without them collapsing. It was impressive how much better she got.

"You win," Kies told her. She looked up at him with her big round eye, unsure of what he said, but got his meaning nevertheless. Kies got up from the floor and brushed the dirt off his pants. It was late afternoon and the sun was setting, streaking the skies with bright red and orange colors.

Kies was thinking about what he should do for the rest of the day when something suddenly flashed across his eyes and blinded him for a second. That bright reflection, he recognized it. He glanced around where the beam had come from and sure enough, he found a big red scaly tail sticking out of a door of a broken house.

Kies knew who that tail belonged to. He would have never guessed that the baby dragon was so close to them this entire time. It had been hiding just two houses away. Kies stared at the tail for a minute. What should he do? The safe choice was to not bother it. It might still be small right now, but it will grow up into a powerful mythical beast capable of annihilating entire cities and towns by itself. But for the time being, it was relatively harmless... or so he thought.

Kies didn't know what a baby dragon could do and he didn't want to find out either. He should probably tell the demons about this and see what they want to do about this. Kies turned around and headed back to the house where everyone was in but stopped when he suddenly heard footsteps behind him.

He spun around and saw that there was a group of hooded men in the area. They were the same ones that tried assassinating them last night. Kies look back at the red tail sticking out of the house. They haven't spotted the dragon yet, but they did see him since he was just standing out in the open. The group walked toward him with their weapons drawn, ready for a fight.

Just his luck. When he thought that things were boring, something big just had to happen. While this definitely was going to help relieve his boredom, it was not what he wanted. Should he call for help or deal with them on his own? It should be fine to leave them alive, right? Falte wanted to question them so he didn't need to kill them. In that case, he should be fine handling them all on his own.

Kies shot a Wind Blade at the closest person which was a few meters away from him. It hit the target square in the chest and left a swallow cut. The assassin slid back and clutched his chest. It was deep enough so that some red could be seen but no blood was coming out of the wound. That amount of power should be perfect for dealing with them.

The rest of the assassins stopped in their tracks once they saw that Kies was a mage and changed their plan. They split up and attacked him on two different sides. They formed two lines and had the two biggest people stand in the front to take all of the attacks. It was a clever formation that would minimize the amount of damage they would take.

It was great dealing against a single ranged enemy like him and it would have been a great idea if Kies could only hit one target at a time. But unfortunately for them, Kies had spells that could deal with that pretty well. Twi Wind Cannons could tear through their entire formation and take them all out, but Kies wasn't sure if he could control his strength enough so that it wouldn't kill them.

Not taking the risk, Kies instead shot more Wind Blades at the one on his right until he couldn't take anymore and retreated to the back. The next person took the front and the line continued just like before. What Kies was doing currently wasn't going to work against this tactic. He needed something else.

Before Kies had the chance to change his plans, a bright ring of light appeared under him and erupted, creating a small dome around him that slowly caved in on him.

Kies had not expected that the enemy would have a mage among them and it was something that he definitely should have thought about before taking them. It was his mistake. But it shouldn't be that big of a problem. Kies chanted Wind Cannon and shot it into the light in front of him. The winds tore through the barrier that trapped him and continued through into a house, blasting a hole through the top right corner of it.

One of the assassins suddenly collapsed onto the floor and started hacking out blood. Another person ran to their side and quickly healed them with light magic. The other assassins all formed a line in front of the two to act as a human wall and block any of Kies' attacks. But they all looked rather nervous. Even if they wanted to, they could try to block Kies' Wind Cannon with their bodies but it would still go through them.

*Thud!*

Kies had been so distracted at the enemies in front of him, that he forgot to consider there being enemies to the side or behind in. A long knife sprouted from behind him and exited through his chest. It was his second mistake that he had made in this fight. It was only. a millimeter away from his core. Kies quickly pushed the blade out through his back and turned around and tried to find the person who threw it.

Though barely a minute had passed since he started fighting them, he had already made two blunders that could've cost him his life.
