A Dragon's Fury II

Lentis watched as a massive cone of fire came pouring down on top of him like water from a hose. "Ugh, you know what..." If he was going to die, he was going to die putting up a fight. He didn't want to accept his fate like this.

He might be out of magic power, but that doesn't mean he couldn't continue fighting. Even if he had put his life on the line, he was going to block that attack. Lentis mustered all the remaining magic he had which totaled up to barely anything. He wasn't an expert at magic or anything, but he was pretty sure that he could use his lifeforce as a replacement for magic to cast spells.

That was a small price to pay in order to protect everyone. He wasn't sure how it worked but it should happen if he tried to cast spells without having sufficient magic to do so. Lentis threw his hands up and called upon the earth to shelter them from the fire. Immediately upon doing so, he felt his body scream out in pain. A wall of dirt shot up from all sides, forming an umbrella to protect them from the fire.

Surprisingly, the wall held up fine against the attack, blocking the entire thing without taking much of a beating. Lentis on the other hand however received a huge backlash from using the spell without having enough magic to cast it normally. He dropped to the ground and began coughing out blood violently.

"Commander!" One of the knights was barely conscious and saw that Lentis was hacking his organs out and wobbled over to him.

"I'm fine," Lentis told the knight. That was a lie. He wasn't fine. "Urk!" Lentis threw up more blood and rolled to his side. Using magic without having enough magic to do so was a lot more dangerous than he thought. But to be fair, the spell he used was a somewhat costly one so a backlash like this made sense.

"You're not okay!" the knight obviously saw. The amount of blood Lentis was coughing out was not something to ignore. If he loses anymore then he will probably die right here and now. "You can't use any more magic!"

The knight helped Lentis back onto his feet and looked up at the earthen dome he created to save them. Outside, they could hear the dragon still trying to melt the wall with fire. From the sounds of it, they still had some time before they were toasted, and quite literally toasted at that. When the wall fell, they were going to get burned to a crisp by its breath.

It was either that or they got squished to death under its feet. Lentis was more than certain that if the dragon wanted to, it could just land on top of the dome and break it in an instant with its weight. He didn't understand why it was still trying to get through with its breath instead of doing that. But whatever the reason was, Lentis was happy that it didn't decide to do so because that was the only reason why they are still alive.

Lentis used his hand and wiped some of the blood from his mouth. When he took his hand away, he saw that the entire backside of it was stained red. He also felt some of the book trickle down his neck and get inside his shirt, tickling him a little. He was surprised he could still feel ticklish in a situation like this.

"Hey, do you hear that?" the knight asked.

Lentis looked at him with an uncertain expression. "Hear what?" He didn't hear anything other than his heartbeat which was ringing loudly in his head and felt like it was going to come up his throat and out his mouth.

"I think the other knights are back!"

"What!? Which direction!?"

The knight pointed at a gap in the dome and Lentis quickly turned to it to see a couple of people in the distance running towards them alongside a giant siege weapon. They made it back, but it was a little too late. The dragon had already broken free and was hovering above them in the sky now. It also learned its lesson and was not coming back down to the ground where it could get trapped again. There was no way for the siege weapon to reach it now.

"D*mn it! Go tell them to run!"

"What about the rest of us then?"

"We're done for! At the very least, you guys need to escape," Lentis told the knight. It was pointless for them to continue fighting when the majority of their forces were already defeated. There was no need for them to give their lives when it wasn't going to do anything. They needed to run before the dragon spotted them.

"Quick, go warn them!"

"No, I'm not-"

"This is an order from your commander and king! Leave me and tell them to run!"

The knight looked hesitant about it but after thinking for a second, he gently put Lentis back down and ran out of the safety of the dome towards the incoming knights.

Rui spotted the knight running her with a bad expression on his face and she immediately saw that something was wrong. She was outside helping guide the siege weapon after switching places with one of the knights since she thought that it would be better if she, the commander, could see what was happening so that she could give orders in accordance with what's going on, allowing the knights to react quicker.

"Wait, where's the dragon?" one of the knights next to her asked. All of them looked around and saw that it wasn't anywhere. The only thing they could see was a giant earthen dome in front of them that hadn't been here when they left.

"I see it! It's up there!"

Everyone looked up and saw a giant winged creature flying above the dome.
