"When did it get free?"
"We obviously took too long. That's why the dragon is free."
"Where is Lentis!?" Rui yelled out in a very concerned voice. If the dragon is free then that meant that something happened to him.
"I think that person coming towards us knows." There was a knight running to them as they spoke and he looked like he had something important to say.
"What happened!?" Rui asked the knight when he got close enough for him to hear her.
"We were no match for the dragon!"
"I know that!" It was clear that they were no match for the dragon and that was why they had to leave to get the siege weapon. What she was asking was how the dragon escaped, and more importantly, "What happened to Lentis and the other knights?"
"They're all hiding under the dome." As the knight said that, the dragon unleashed another torrent of flames onto the dome.
"That doesn't look good..."
"We need to hurry! Get to Lentis and the knights now!" Rui ordered everyone.
"No, don't do that!" the knight in front of them told them.
"What do you mean don't!? They're in trouble so we need to help them!"
"The commander told us to go! We can't win the fight now that the dragon is in the air! We need to leave before it spots us!"
"What are you talking about!? Are you saying that we abandon them all and run away!?"
"No! Er- I mean yes! Ugh! I mean I don't want to do it either but the commander told me to tell you guys this! The siege weapon is useless now. We can't hit the dragon with it anymore."
"We're not running! We're taking that thing down!" Rui didn't care what Lentis said. They were going to fight the dragon and that was that. It was either they took that beast down or that they died trying. There was no other option or outcome.
The knights looked at each other. They were conflicted about whose order they should follow. Both Lentis and Rui were their commanders and although Lentis was also their king, they as knights followed no one but their commanders. In this scenario, they were unsure of what they should do.
"What are you all looking around confused for!? Don't tell me you all lost your spines or something!? We're going in!" Rui didn't wait for the knights to make their decisions. She already made hers. It was selfish but she was going to have the knights go in and rescue Lentis. If they ran here then they were all screwed anyway.
Not only would they lose their new king in less than a month after he rose to the throne but they would also have no forces left. This meant that if the demons attacked, they had no one to lead them and no soldiers to fight them. But that was only if the dragon didn't destroy Silverfield before then. She understood that well, and she hoped that the knights understood that too.
Rui charged into the open streets without waiting for her knights to say anything. There was no time anymore. Every second she spent there watching was a second that she could have used to go help Lentis. Time was against her and she needed to get there before the barrier breaks.
The dragon spotted her almost instantly as she charged in and turned its head to her. It breathed fire at her and she had to duck behind a house to dodge it. She had no idea how the knight from before had been able to make it to them without being spotted by the dragon. It was in the sky and should have seen him as he ran but she wasn't going to waste time questioning it.
After the fire stopped, Rui jumped out from behind the cover. She glanced over at the front side of the house where the attack hit as she ran by it and saw that the entire thing was charred black along with the ground around it.
"Here goes nothing..." Rui raised her hands up and channeled the magic that was inside her. The magic that she scorned so much. She made an oath to never use her magic but that oath will have to be broken. She needed it right now to fight against the dragon. Her sword wasn't going to reach it and magic is the only way she could hit the beast.
The air around her grew cold and began to drop to the ground. There was no water around her but the air was filled with it. She had no experience with this but she was sure that if she concentrated hard enough, she would be able to do it. Slowly, the moisture in the air condensed together and froze into a mess of ice. It was barely bigger than her hand and looked like it might fall apart at any moment.
"D*mn it!" If only she practiced using her magic before then she wouldn't have this problem. Whatever, this will have to do. It was better than nothing. Rui raised her arm up and the spikey ice ball followed. She launched it at the dragon and it spattered harmlessly against its scales. It was almost like throwing a snowball at someone. It did absolutely nothing.
Rui cursed silently to herself and tried again. She concentrated harder this time and created another ball of ice, but it was bigger this time. "This won't work either..." It was still too small to do any damage. Unless she could launch this at light speed, it wouldn't do anything to the dragon. She dropped the ball of ice and retreated behind cover again when she saw that the dragon was getting ready for another attack.
It swooped down over her while breathing fire this time, burning the area around her and almost hitting her. She got lucky and the fire barely missed her as the dragon went by. Rui looked up at the sky after the attack was done and saw the dragon swooping back around for a second attack, and this time she had nowhere to hide. The wall was behind her and she had no way to get around it in time to dodge the attack.
Not good! Rui held her arms up and got ready to block the attack with them. She kneeled down to make her body as small as possible so that she would sustain only a part of the damage. Hopefully, this would allow her to survive. And if she didn't... She didn't know. She will have to see.
Rui peeked through the crack between her arms at the dragon as it got closer to her. Its fire followed right behind it and burned everything on the ground where it flew. She saw now how big of a mistake confronting the dragon on her own. She wasn't going to survive this. Rui closed her eyes and tucked her arms close to her body. She could only pray for a miracle to happen now.
"You're a handful, you know that?"
