Farewell In Flames IV

Lentis looked up at the colossal beast that was blocking out the sun. Its size is a fraction of the size of Silverfield and it was tearing the kingdom apart. He knew for a fact that nothing in the world can save them now. Even if everyone still alive in the kingdom works together to try to take out the monster, it would do nothing.

"Why..." Why God!? What did they do to deserve this? What did they ever do to anger the dragons!? "D*mn it all!" Lentis clutches his chest which is aching in pain from having thrown up so much blood. He throws his other hand up and aims it at the dragon. "Arghh!" He musters up all the magic power he can to let out one final attack on the dragon. It didn't matter if it did nothing. The kingdom is gone and so is his will to continue living. The knights, all his brothers, and sisters, every single last one of them were gone as well.

They should've run away... Why didn't they run away!? Lentis puts all his anger and frustration into this final attack but before he has the chance to fire it off, someone grabs him and pulls him to the ground. "Who-"

The person's hand was freezing to the touch. Lentis quickly grabbed the hand and pushed it off his shoulder. While still on the ground, he turns and looks behind him to see how it is that threw him to the ground. Upon seeing the person's face, Lentis' eyes widened. "How are you still alive!?"

"I-I don't know... But we need to go," Rui's voice was shaky and her body was freezing. All her hair has turned white from overusing the magic and her face is as pale as a ghost's. Or maybe she was a ghost...

"I saw you get crushed under the dragon," Lentis tells her in disbelief.

"I... got out..." Rui wasn't sure what happened either. One second everything was black and the next second, she found herself here standing right behind Lentis.

"What's that on your hand?"

Rui looked down at the mark on her hand which was glowing even more brightly than ever. Actually... It wasn't even glowing at it. The color had turned icy blue and looked like it was part of her skin now. "It's my family's... crest."

"Crest?"

"I can't explain it right now. We need to leave." Rui helps Lentis back onto his feet and the two turn to flee Silverfield but Lentis stops her and points at the earthen dome that he created.

"Wait, we need to save them- as well..." His voice fades off when he realizes that the dragon has destroyed it and crushed everyone underneath with its foot. The color in his eyes drains out as he realizes that they are the only two survivors. Everyone else is dead.

"We need to go!" Rui carried the lifeless Lentis out from underneath the dragon's shadow. Luckily, the dragon had its head turned the other way and didn't notice that there were two people who survived its wrath.

They find a horse that had its reins stuck underneath some rubble and Rui lets go of Lentis for a moment to free the horse. Upon getting up, the horse immediately tries to make a break for it but Rui tugs its reins and gets it to calm down enough for her to help Lentis up onto the horse. She then also gets on and puts herself in the front.

After making sure that Lentis is secured and wouldn't fall off midway through the ride, she hits the reins and the horse eagerly takes off. They speed through the city, or rather, the remains of the city. There isn't a single house that is intact anymore and the streets are riddled with wreckage and rubble. The horse had to slow down a couple of times to carefully and walk over all the bodies and rocks before continuing to bolt out of the city.

But debris blocking their way was the least of their worries. After making it halfway through the city, they encountered a bunch of people dressed in rags. They had torches and other weapons in their hands and were setting fire to everything. When Rui got close enough, she saw that they were all demi-humans. They were taking advantage of the chaos caused by the dragon to further lay waste to the city.

Rui knew that they had justification to do that because they had been slaves and were abused by the humans a lot. But seeing this makes her frozen blood boil. She couldn't use magic anymore for the time being since her body couldn't handle it and so she drew her blade instead. The top half of it was broken and was missing entire chunks of it but it was more than enough to handle them.

The demi-humans spot Rui and Lentis on the horse and point at her. Within seconds, the rest are aware of her incoming approach and form a wall in front of her to stop her from escaping.

Rui held her sword out "Ha!" She hit the reins to speed the horse up. She charged through the demi-humans, cutting down a number of them as she tore through their ranks. She came out the other side unscratched and she could hear them yelling out after her as she galloped away on the horse.

The rest of the ride went smoothly. Rui and Lentis made it out of the city after riding for a couple of minutes. When they passed the gates, Rui tugged on the reins to stop the horse and they slowly turned around to get one last look at the kingdom.

There was smoke rising up into the skies, fire burning everything, and carnage all over the place. In the center of it all is a massive scaled beast breathing fire down onto the city. Silverfield is no more.

Rui felt tears stream down her cheeks as she watched their home get destroyed by the dragon. There's no point in looking at it anymore. She turns the horse back in their original direction which is away from the burning city and they ride off.
