While waiting for the portal to open to transfer them out of this place and into safety, the demons watch with amused faces as the dragon tore apart the kingdom. The city was completely destroyed. There wasn't a single building that was left standing. The dragon had moved on and was currently destroying everything on the outskirts of the kingdom. In other words, it was burning down all the farms and smaller villages. Even if there were survivors, they wouldn't be able to recover now that their source of food is gone.
It was burning the farms and the houses on the outskirts of the kingdom past the walls. As of right now, the dragon is on the opposite side of them but with its speed, it was only a matter of time before the dragon circles around to the forest and burns this place down as well.
"Take your time, d*mn it! There are no humans in this forest. You don't need to come here!" Falte begged the dragon.
Ammine gave Falte an annoyed look. She understood why he was so worried but was there really a point in saying that out loud? It wasn't like the dragon could hear them or anything.
They still had a couple of hours before the portal opens. The sun has almost set and the moon is peeking over the horizon. It was surprising how they are still able to see the moon and the sun when the sky is almost completely blotted by smoke and black clouds. All around them, the beastmen talk to each other nervously. They were also afraid that the dragon might pass through here and set fire to the forest.
"We need to move now before the dragon comes!"
"Are you crazy!? We have no supplies and a bunch of youngsters as well. We won't make it far. We need to wait for when it turns dark and then we head back into the city and scavenge for supplies."
"No, the dragon will kill us all if we do that!"
"We will die without supplies!"
The beastmen were sure h*lla noisy. Ammine wanted to shout at them to shut up but refrained from doing so because it would just cause a fight between them. Although she really didn't care whether or not they are enemies, right now, it is a bad idea to pick a fight with the beastmen. Not only are they heavily outnumbered, but on average, a beastman has physical strength that rivals a demon's. In short, picking a fight with this many of them here is the equivalent of asking for a beating.
"I wish they could just be quiet. Why do they have to shout all the time?" Ammine mutters to herself.
Falte hears her complaint and says, "I can say the same for you. Why are you so pissed off all the time? Can't you smile and act like a normal person from time to time?" Ammine gave him a stern glare for his remark. "See, exactly what I mean."
"I am like this because I want to be like this. But, you guys need to fix your attitudes."
"How hypocritical of you." But Falte didn't say anything else since he knew that arguing with Ammine would get him nowhere. Instead, it was better to say nothing even if he disagreed with her.
The group watched the dragon until it turned dark. Luckily, the dragon was too busy laying waste to everything on the other side of the kingdom and didn't make it to their side. The portal opened up near the roof of the forest and it took them all a while to spot it. If not for Tornon's voice thundering down on top of them, the demons wouldn't have seen the portal at all.
When that happened, Tornon frightened all the beastmen by making them think that it was the dragon that was talking to them. When they saw who it was, they didn't feel any safer. Ammine grabbed Kies and the group flew up and through the portal in the sky. They left the forest and reappeared back home. After a long explanation of what happened in Silverfield, Ammine carried Kies back to his hut and left him there.
Normally, they would be celebrating this occasion since Silverfield is no more, and that would be what they are doing right now if it weren't for how the other mission turned out. After returning back and reporting what happened to Silverfield, Ammine and the rest of the team were congratulated for what they did, but after they were done, Tornon explained to them what happened in Otane.
This mission ended in failure because of some unexpected enemy reinforcements arriving at the nick of time when the battle was almost won. From the looks of things, it seemed that the reinforcements were a mix of soldiers from Silverfield and those that Otane sent earlier to take out Silverfield. From it, it was learned that Silverfield and Otane formed a truce with each other to deal with their greatest foe first, and that was the demons.
Fortunately, the team made it back with all its members, but not without sustaining injuries. Many of them are recovering. But, it wasn't all bad news. The demons managed to assassinate the king of Otane before leaving and put the kingdom in disarray. For now, the demons are safe from any attacks and could use this time to build up their forces and wait for the Soulless to finish preparing their forces as well.
For now, everything is quiet as both sides are quietly bidding their strengths.
