CHAPTER 10
LUCKY FURROWED her forehead when she got out of their apartment building and saw Kayden sitting on the hood of a parked car.
He smiled when he saw her. "Yow, Ms. Hart. Miss me?" He asked, teasing her.
"Good morning." She cheerly greeted Kayden. "And no, I didn't miss you. Are you waiting for Jayden?"
"Nope." He stood up and opened the passenger seat door in his car. "I'll take you to your job."
Her eyebrows rose. "Why? I'm used to walk to my job since it's not that far from here." She walked passed by him, "Come on, just join me for a walk---"
"Ms. Hart, wait!"
She turned to Kayden and she can't help but feel concern when she saw he was limping while he walk and he kept wincing like he was hurt at every time he took a step.
She immediately attended him. "What happened to you?"
"Jaydee happened."
She put his one arm around her shoulder and wrapped her arm around his waist. "Come on, I'll help you get in your car."
Kayden let her help, but they've just took a step closer to the car, she saw Jayden leave the apartment.
Their eyes met, but he quickly look away and left.
Her attention returned to Kayden who suddenly straightened up and smiled. "Come on, Ms. Hart, I'll take you to your work."
She looked down at his feet. "Are you okay?"
Kayden just shrugged.
She glared at him. "Were you playing with me?"
"Not you. Come on."
She watched Kayden walk towards his car first, she noticed that he was still limping.
"Come on, Ms. Hart." He said before getting in the car.
She was forced to ride in his car because of her gratitude for him. "What happened to you? What did Jayden do to you?"
"He stabbed me."
"Jayden will never do that." She glared at Kayden. "He's nice and---"
"He's not nice." Kayden interrupted what she had to say. "He stabbed me last night."
She looked down at Kayden's foot which was dripping with blood at above of his knee. "Holy molly...it's blood."
"Told yah!"
"Why would he do that to you?" She wondered. "He's your twin."
"He ate a lot of jelly aces."
Her eyebrows met. "What does that had to do with stabbing you?"
Kayden just laughed then turned on the car engine and started driving it.
When they arrived at the school she was teaching, she immediately got out of Kayden's car but he stopped her before she could enter the school gate.
"Wait."
She turned to Kayden and peeked inside from the passenger seat window since it was lowered. "Yes?"
"I'll get you, after your work."
And now she's confused. "Why?"
Kayden grinned. "Let's just say that I have a theory, okay? Just go with it, is that okay with you?"
She shrugged. "Okay. Is there anything else I can do with your theory so you don't have to pick me up?"
Kayden laughed. "You don't want me to take you and fetch you from your job?" He acted hurt at the same time he put his hand on his chest. "You really say some hurtful words. I thought you were kind and we were close."
She stuck her tongue at Kayden. "I'm kind and we're just a little close. I'm just not used to someone picking me up and fetching me from work."
One of his eyebrows rose. "Really?" His teasingly smiled, "But when Jayden picks you up, you won't complain---"
Instead of being annoyed by his teasing, she just laughed. "Sure, it's Jayden we're talking about ---"
"I told you not to be a softy to my twin."
She pouted. "Oh right, I'm sorry. But what can I do with your theory so you don't have to pick me up?"
"One thing."
"What?"
"Let me call you baby girl."
Her eyebrows met. "I look like a child when you call me that."
"Well..." He looked at her from head to toe, "You're short and you act like a kid sometimes and you're innocent in some things. So yeah, you're a baby girl."
She frowned at him. "I really don't want to. I won't look at you when you called me that."
She turned her back on him and walked towards the gate.
"Baby girl, come on! Baby girl!" Kayden called her.
She ignored him.
"Ms. Hart, look, it's Jayden."
She automatically turned around and because of her sudden movement, Kayden laughed out loud.
She frowned as she glared at Kayden. "You're mean. Why are you bullying me?"
Kayden just laughed. "Goodbye, baby girl. See you later."
"I don't want to see you. Bleh!"
She's irritated. She knew she was acting like a child but she was irritated with Kayden. While she was thinking last night, she thought that Jayden might be angry because she and Kayden are together.
'I mean, Jayden did kiss me.'
Maybe he won't kiss her for no reason.
And in the romantic films she has watched, the male protagonist always kisses the woman he likes.
That means, Jayden likes her.
She was about to smile but it slowly disappeared she remembered that Jayden had ignored her earlier.
He hates her now.
And it has something to do with Kayden.
She frowned as she entered her classroom and forced herself to enjoy herself while teaching the children. She did not want her thinking to affect her teaching.
When afternoon came, Lucky suddenly felt exhausted. So she said goodbye to their head that she would go home early to rest.
As she walked towards her apartment, she called Kayden.
"Don't pick me up, I'm going home." She said in a breathless voice as he answered the call.
"You okay, baby girl?" He said, worry was evident in his voice.
"Yes." Her breathing is getting shorter and shorter, "I-I'm just having difficulty breathing."
"Oh, fuck. Where are you?"
"On the way home. W-Walking."
"Stay there." He said then turned off the call.
She had no intention of listening to Kayden but she was really short of breath so she remained standing while her hand was on her chest and she was catching her breath.
My heart...
She closed her eyes tightly and then prayed that her breathing would go back to normal but it got worse.
Lucky is getting scared. Fear is making her condition worse.
"N---no..." She said softly when she felt she was going to fall.
But she did not fall, someone hugged her on the waist and caught her. That was the last thing she realized before she completely lost consciousness.
LUCKY WOKE UP in a hospital room. She knew immediately that she was in the Hospital because of the IV that was pierced into her wrist. She removed the oxygen mask she was wearing then tried to get up but someone stopped her.
"Rest, sweetheart."
She blinked at the speaker, "Grand-mommy? W-What are you doing here?"
She sat on the side of the bed she was lying on. "Sweetie, your Doctor called me. I didn't take your Grand-daddy with me, he might have a heart attack when he saw your condition. You know that, he loves you so much."
She looked down. "I'm sorry, Grand-mommy, I just don't want you and Grand-daddy to worry about me."
"It's okay dear." She caressed her forehead and hair. "We expected that this will happen when we allowed you to move out even if you are in this situation." She smiled at her. "You know we just want you happy and contented, sweetie. But hopefully next time, tell me. This is the second time you have been hospitalized that we do not know."
"Sorry, Grand-mommy. I won't do it again."
"Good girl." She kissed her on the forehead. "Sweetie, can you return home? We'll take good care of you better there."
She smiled at her Grandmother. "Grand-mommy, we already talked about this. I want to experience being independent and working. I want to experience life, Grand-mommy. No matter how difficult it is. I want to see the outside world, outside of my comfort zone and your loving arms. "
Her Grand-mommy's face softened. "In that case, let Diane accompany you to your apartment." Diane is their oldest maid in the mansion.
She shook her head. "I'll be okay, Grand-mommy. I'll return home when I really can't handle it anymore. I'll call, I promised you that, didn't I?"
Her Grand-mommy sighed. "I don't want to force you. I don't want you to get upset, I'll let you do what you want. But when you got hospitalized again, you will go home, okay?"
She nodded. "Okay."
"I will send Diane to your apartment everyday to clean and cook for you so you don't get tired."
"Okay, Grand-mommy. Thank you. I love you."
"I love you too, sweetie." She squeezed her hand. "All right, I'll just talk to your Doctor to calm myself down. I'll leave you for a while."
She smiled brightly at her Grandmother. "Love you, Grand-mommy." She give her a flying kiss. "Love you."
Her Grandmother laughed as she left her room. She was still smiling when the door opened again and Kayden entered.
She tried to get up, but he quickly stopped her.
"Don't do that. Just rest."
He still got up and was comfortably sitting on the bed. "I'm feeling better now."
"That's good." He sat on the side of the bed, facing her. "Good thing that Jayden was near where you were earlier and you were taken to the Hospital right away."
"He caught me?" She asked in disbelief.
Kayden nodded. "Yeah."
She smiled. "Where is he?"
Kayden shook his head. "I told you not to be a softy, baby girl."
She pouted. "Oh yeah, I forgot. But where is he? I want to see him."
"He left."
She was immediately saddened. "Is he going to do anything?"
"Yeah. He said he'll go visit Sophia."
"A woman?" She asked.
"Yes."
She averted her gaze from Kayden as she felt upset and there was pain in her heart.
'If I continue to like him, he will have the power to hurt me.' That's what Dr. Axel told her.
She rubbed her chest. "It hurts."
"I know, I know..." Kayden said in a voice as if he understood her, "That's why I told you, don't be a softy when it comes to my twin. You will be hurt."
She bit her lower lip as she looked at Kayden. "Can I unlike him?"
"Lucky..." He looked at her softly, "If unliking someone is that easy, many have already done that."
She frowned as tears welled up in her eyes. "I can't help but cry because he was visiting an another woman."
"You're jealous, that's normal."
She sighed incessantly as her tears flowed. "I'm not allowed to be hurt, I can't...I don't want to... Kayden, please, how can I unlike him?"
"I don't know." Kayden said then patted her arm, "But don't worry, I'm on your side."
"But Jayden is on Sophia's side." She is crying again. "Why don't my tears stop?"
He wiped away her tears. "Don't cry anymore. You've just recovered, you won't be able to breathe properly from what you are doing."
She dried her tears. "Okay."
Kayden smiled at her. "Good girl. Now hear me out," He took a deep breath before continuing. "Sophia is already dead and she was Jayden's girlfriend. Jayden went to the cemetery to visit her."
"Does he still love her?" She weakly asked.
Kayden sighed. "I'm not sure."
"It looks like, he still does." She stared at the emptiness. "She's dead, but he still loves her. It seems it's more difficult, right? I mean, when she's is alive, she always does something and he sees it, so she was loved by him, but now, she's gone, she's can no longer be seen but he still love her. What can I do? Do I even have a chance? "
"Lucky..."
"Maybe I'll still lose this feeling." She hopefully said. "I don't think this feelings that I have for him is that deep yet."
"When you get hurt, that's deep."
She took a deep breath to calm herself. "Is she the reason why Jayden is broken?"
"Part of."
She bitterly smiled. "I give up. I have nothing against her."
"Baby girl---"
"I just made the right decision to avoid Jayden. That was right but, why did he kiss me if he didn't want to forget his girlfriend? Does he just want to be entertained?"
"It's not like that." Kayden said then smiled sadly. "I think he's guilty because he likes you and he forgets Sophia. That's why he threw away your gummy bears, right?"
So that's the real reason why her gummy bears ended up in the trash bin.
She nodded. "If I can't unlike him, can I do something instead?"
"Be strong." Kayden said. "Liking Jayden and being with him is not gonna be easy. You said you won't tell him how you feel until you are sure of how he feels about you. And for me, that's the best move. Keep on liking him if you can't unlike him, but do not expect so you won't get hurt. "
She smiled sadly. "My Grand-mommy used to say, when a woman likes a man, even though she know there is no possibility that her feelings have a response, she'll still hope that he will like her."
Kayden smiled. "Your Grand-mommy is very wise."
That made her smile. "She is. She taught me the things I should have learned by experience. So somehow, I know something about the world."
"Meaning you're innocent, but not really?"
She nodded. "Yeah, you could say that."
He laughed. "Okay, take a rest. Stop thinking about Jayden---"
The door suddenly opened and Jayden entered.
The sadness that she was feeling earlier, suddenly disappeared and was replaced by happiness
"Jayden..." She smiled at him.
He approached her then stood beside the bed. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm okay." She smiled brightly at him.
"Good." He nodded, "All right, I'm leaving. I just want to know if you're doing alright."
He was just about to step away when she held him in his hand. "Wait."
He turned to her, his face emotionless, "What?"
She tried to get out of bed even though Kayden was holding her back. She does not hold back. She stood in front of Jayden and slowly wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him tightly.
"I told you not to be a softy." She heard Kayden whispered but she ignored it.
She wanted to hug Jayden. She wanted to be consoled by him, to hear him say 'it's okay' to her. That he's here for her. She wanted to repeat the time that he held her hand when someone stole her purse and he said it was okay because he was there.
She wanted to hear those words from him.
"Luck..." Jayden breathes out. "I have to go."
'To visit Sophia again?'
Her chest tightened. "Just a minute, please ..."
"Lucky---"
"I was scared today." Her tears welled up. "I just...I just need you to say it's okay."
"You have Kayden to say that." He said in a cold voice.
She bit her lower lip to stop herself from sobbing. "I want to hear it from you, please?"
He sighed. "It's gonna be okay."
He's cold and distant.
She loosened her arms that is wrapped around his waist and then looked up at him. And even though there was pain in her heart, she still managed to smiled at him. "Thank you. You can go now. I'll be okay."
She was startled when he raised his hand to caress the edge of her tears-soaked eyes. "Don't cry, it's not good for your health."
Smiling she nodded. "Okay."
He nodded then turned his back on her and walked away. She just looked at the man's back. She wanted to stop him, she wanted to be with him but she did not want to force him to stay.
She weakly sat on the side of the bed then stared at the emptiness. And when she heard the door of the bedroom closed, her tears fell.
"I can't unlike him." She whispered softly.
Kayden went to her side and rubbed her back. "I told you that don't be a softy."
She smiled sadly. "I can't help it. I want to hug him. When he got drunk, I don't know, he had a different attitude and I told him it was weird but why now, I want him to be like that again."
"Hey..." Kayden wiped the tears from her eyes. "Jayden just needs to figure something out. He needs time to let it sink so he could choose what's best for him."
She sighed. "Would he choose me though?"
"Baby girl---"
"I have nothing against the dead, Kayden."
"Lucky..."
She shook her head. "But that's okay. I can't force someone to choose me and like me back as much as I like them. Grand-mommy already told me about this. Not everyone you like and appreciate will feel the same way to you."
"I understand that. Even my own Mother, wasn't able to love me. Maybe Jayden likes me, but it's enough to forget Sophia. Not enough...I'm still not enough..." Her voice quivered. "Always not enough for their love and care."
Kayden let out a loud breath. "My brother is fucked up." He said then gently hugged her and stroked her back. "Just rest. You need that. Don't even think about my stupid twin."
She stared at Kayden. "Why are you so kind to me?"
Kayden smiled. "I'm kind to kind people."
She smiled and then lay down on the bed again, no matter how hard she tried, Jayden never left her mind so she could not totally rest.
"WHAT THE HELL are you doing here, Jaydee?" A familiar voice asked as he leaned against the door of Lucky's occupied room at the Hospital.
Jayden opened his eyes and saw Axel. "Hey."
"What are you doing here?" Axel repeated his question.
He just shrugged.
Axel frowned at him and pointed to the door. "You're here for Ms. Hart?"
He frowned. "You know her?"
"I'm her new Cardiologist. Kayden recommended me to her yesterday." He replied. "You, what are you doing here?"
"Just visiting."
Axel sighed before facing him fully. "Have you been inside yet? Did you ask her if she's doing well?"
He nodded. "She's okay."
"But that doesn't mean she's healthy." Axel said as he shook his head. "Her heart is getting weak. I'm not God but I know when my patient is near to saying goodbye."
It feels like a hand gripped his heart. "What do you mean?"
"Her heart will stop pumping blood soon. That's what I mean."
"No." He shook his head, he could not accept what he had just heard. "She looks healthy. I mean, have you seen her smile? She's lively, Axel. She's not going to die!"
Axel sighed. "I can't say when but I know she will die. Many patients need a heart transplant but during the waiting period, they didn't make it."
He shook his head violently. "No...that's not true. Lucky is okay. She's healthy. Go on. Look. Check on her. She's lively to me, she can stand, she can walk, she can even teach, she's not dying, Axel...she's not. "
Axel tapped his shoulder. "Bud, you know that I don't lie when it comes to life and death. I already told her Grandmother so they can prepare for the worst. And I suggest you make her happy while she's still alive, but not super happy, because it can affect her too. "
His forehead furrowed at his friend. "What do you mean make her happy? It's Kayden's job to make her happy."
The one in front of him frowned, "I don't think it's Kayden's job, I mean, aren't you the one she likes?"
His world stops spinning. "W-What?"
"In our check-up, yesterday." There was a look of confusion on his face. "She told me about this man that makes her heart throbbed and she's scared because she thought it has something to do with her heart problem." He shook his head while laughing. "She even told me that this man kissed her suddenly, Kayden started cussing and he told me that the man she was referring to was Jaydee. I only know one Jaydee and it's you."
He couldn't move. He was rooted in place while his heart is throbbing inside his chest.
"Oh, fuck." Axel rubbed his face with his hand when he realized that he did not know what he was saying. "She haven't told you that she likes you?"
He shook his head. "N---no."
Axel let out a loud breath. "Forget that I ever told you that." He said then entered Lucky's room.
And Jayden found himself entering Lucky's room again.
He stared at the woman.
And when their eyes met, she smiled brightly at him. "Jayden."
He approached her bed. "Hey."
She was smiling sweetly at him. "You came back."
"Yeah."
"Thank you." She beamed at him.
He just nodded and his attention shifted when he saw his twin looking at Lucky and kept whispering 'Don't be a softy.'
And when Kayden felt his gaze, he looked at him and shook his head.
He approached his twin and then put his arm around him and simply whispered in his ear. "You idiot."
"You're the stupid one here." He answer also in a whisper. "You stabbed me last night. It hurts, you know?"
"Obviously, I stabbed so it will probably hurt."
His twin just shook his head. "I don't know you, stay away from me."
His grip on him tightened. "I have a Lava Cake in the car. Do you want it?"
He glared at him. "You thought you could fool me with that Lava Cake ---"
"Louise made it." Louise was the owner of the Sweet Shop near the BV. He and his friends love to eat or buy there because all of her sweets are just purely delicious.
Kayden stopped glaring at him. "Did Louise really make that?"
"Yes, I bought it for you."
"Fuck you." He said then shook his head. "Okay, I know you again."
He tapped his shoulder. "You're an easy one to convince."
"It's only because of the Lava Cake you bought."
He just shook his head and then looked at Lucky with her eyes closed as Axel examined her.
He suddenly felt relieved and the heavy feeling he felt because of the accident that Axel told him earlier totally disappeared in his system.
'She likes me too.'
Does she know he likes her too?
