Wharton's new ability

Roland's P.O.V.

This young soldier was the perfect candidate for the live trials. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect volunteer to aid in the succession of the total development of the cure. He was healthy and in perfect shape with medical ailments listed and all blood work came back, perfect.

I let the others go rest while I continued conducting the experiments with Specialist Wharton. He truly was a brave warrior there was no hesitation in his voice and determination filled his brown eyes.

"Okay Specialist Wharton this will be the last trial, I have upped the volume of specimen X that I will inject into your body, and I will leave the current dosage for the antidote at the same level." He nodded back to me as I grabbed the syringe.

Slowly I pushed the needle into his bicep and specimen X entered his body. I monitored the cellular spread and his blood cell count of both red and white. The numbers began to fluctuate to show signs of an infection and that his body was being attacked.

Print another syringe with the cure this time I infected him again in the same bicep. He didn't flinch or wince in pain; he kept his composure. It was truly so that nothing seemed to break his hardened exterior.

Within a matter of minutes, his blood cell count began to fluctuate rapidly again back to normal. After a quick scan and test of specimen X, he was clear again of the virus and perfectly healthy.

" Any pain?"

"No."

"How do you feel?"

"Fine Doctor, " he replied quickly.

"Marvelous, I believe it is safe to say that with your help we can begin full-scale development, " I patted his shoulder and smiled.

He smiled back at me and got up from the table he had been sitting on. With just a few days of trials, we are ready to finally put an end to the monstrosity. And hopefully, stop Solarious and Neese before it is too late.

Wharton's P.O.V.

I wasn't too sure of myself when I had initially volunteered to basically be a Guinea pig. However, it was the duty of a Numir soldier to do what was best for all life and the citizens of Numir. Not only that, If I had not even tried to offer myself up. Elder SoZu would have had my head for hiding behind others. As his youngest descendant of fire manipulators it was up to me to keep the reputation of Elder SoZu and my family on a high pedestal.

After I finished with Doctor Roland or at least I am assuming he goes by Doctor in his title. I decided to head out for a walk around the city. With training on the base and the crazy experiments some fresh air and sunlight was what I needed.

I stretched my arms above my head and yawned. I didn't realize how tired just sitting on an examination table getting poked all day could make me. Shaking it off I head downstairs and out the door of the lab. Warmth greeted my cheeks and bright light made me squint my eyes.

The air smelled magnificent so refreshing, I could make out the sweet scents of cakes and pastries being made and fresh baked bread coming from the local bakery. I could smell the pine in the nearby trees and the faint hint of freshly fallen snow from the mountains.

Wait how could I smell snow from inside the city walls? I've never been able to smell the snow from the mountains from where I am and now I can. What the hell? I turned my heel and quickly walked back inside to find Roland. Something strange was happening to me.

As I reentered the building more and more scents flooded my nasal cavity. I could smell the air freshener that had been sprayed in the area, a sweet apple cinnamon smell. Then I could smell the bleach used on the counters. Everything down to the spray some used on their clothing. This is crazy and overwhelming. I found Roland in the lab still he was jotting down notes on his clipboard.

He looked up from the paper and his brow furrowed upward a bit. Clicking his pen and putting it back in his pocket.

"Specialists Wharton are you alright?" He said setting the clipboard down.

"Roland, I'm not sure I went outside and suddenly I could smell any and everything. I can even smell the faint hint of my blood samples."

Roland's eyes grew wide and he tapped his chin.

"Well this is quite unexpected, let's keep you on observation for the time being."  He replied.

I settled myself down on the hospital bed as Roland hooked me up to the heart monitor, pulse, and oxygen reading machine. He drew a few more tubes of blood to see if he could find any changes within the samples from now and before I got injected.

"Do you think I may gain anything else other than an increase in smell?"

"Too early to tell, we will see how the next couple of days go."

I sighed, I hated waiting games especially when it comes to matters such as this. I had little patience as it was and now out of nowhere I have this crazy increase in my sense of smell and we didn't even know why.

Roland's P.O.V.

It's been a frustrating few days, I have run test after test and scan after scan and I have yet to figure out how our candidate had developed an acute sense of smell. He says he doesn't feel any different and shows no sign of any ailments. My main concern was if after a few injections Specialist Wharton gained an increase in smell what would happen to other lifeforms once injected with the cure.

We needed to conduct more intense research but that would take time and time was not on our side. I have no doubts that while we have been working endlessly on finding a cure Solarious has grown his army and has already made advancements in conquering planets.

While things are quiet here in other parts there is chaos. There are innocents dying and evil spreading like wildfire. And there was nothing anyone could do until we had the upper hand. Any opposition towards Solarious meant certain death. No one stood a chance against him without the cure.

I ran my hand over my face, I was getting frustrated and could feel myself on the verge of passing out from exhaustion. I haven't slept a wink in three days. The others have encouraged me to sleep and not stay up long hours but I was determined. Unfortunately no matter how determined I was my cyborg body sit needed to recharge. In a couple hours I would have no choice but to cave and go rest.

"Roland how's Wharton?" I heard a voice from behind me.

"Ah, Z he is doing quite well there haven't been any further changes thus far." I replied.

"Let's hope it stays that way, if all we have to worry about is an increase in smell then it will be okay to still develop the cure on a broader scale."

"I am with you. I hope for all our sakes that it is just a minor side effect and I can move us on to the next step." I reply, yawning.

"Why don't you go rest?" Z places a hand on my shoulder.

I look at the time it was four in the evening. I have officially been going for three days straight.

"I think I will, " I got to my feet and powered down the screens and computer.

"Get some rest to Specialist" Z looks at him he is lying in bed watching some cyber soap opera.

He does a two finger salute to Z  and returns his attention back to his show. Even though he has been cooped up in a lab for a few days and being a guinea pig for experiments with a lot of unknown risks he still maintained his serious yet sly personality.
