Chapter 32: Grounded…again

Mama yelled at me for another half an hour before I was sent to my room to "think about it."

For the first time I really contemplated running away. This was for the birds. I was a grown-ass woman trying to live in another grown-ass woman's house. I was trying to do good here. I didn't need to be chastised and walking on eggshells around her.

You know what, just forget it. Let her grow into a bitter old woman. I am done helping her.

I put my pillow over my head and sulked.

Billy came over, and Nubia announced that I was grounded as he led him to our bedroom.

"Mama said that she can still tutor and babysit you, but y'all have to stay in the house."

Bill gave Nubia a stricken look before he looked at me. I was reading Kenyatta's Revenge after finishing Daddy Cool and Whoreson. Mama was so mad at me that she didn't want me out of my bedroom in order to start my punishment of cleaning the house.

"How long?" Bill asked.

"A month," I said.
