Almost sixty years ago, we were killin' each other for loaves of bread. Now I can visit my grandson on Mars every weekend. Far as I can tell, he'll never go hungry. For that, I am eternally grateful.

Pyra twisted in her seat, struggling not to look away as a line of new prisoners was ushered into the cafeteria. Three times Pyra had witnessed fresh batches of recruits stumble into their new lives, and three times she had wanted to shout and scream and rage until Sword Station fell to pieces around her.

The children looked terrified as the Hunter Guards stopped them, retreating into a corridor before a large door rolled into place and sealed itself shut. One of the smaller boys started to cry. The older newcomers looked upon him with pity in their eyes, but Chip's gang had set upon them before anyone could comfort the child.
