Chapter 71

"I HATE YOU."

"No, you don't," Rich said. "Stop talking. They're probably listening."

Lisha clamped her mouth shut. She wanted to scream at her father until the pink morning sky turned back into night. This man had ruined the lives of his entire family by putting his faith in a movement that had immediately betrayed him, whether they realized it or not.

They betrayed their own, too, she thought. Mad is wounded. That one guy, Royce? He's dead now.

If Mad hadn't spotted the Sovereignty's scouts, all of them would be dead now. Lisha imagined the hail of bullets from across the street puncturing her skin, skimming across her bones and into her vital organs. If she'd died on that sidewalk, what would have happened to Cade?

What still might happen to him?
