Chapter 30: Resistance, Part 1

Even with five of us in the jeep, Aiden gunned the engine, peeling out, sending a shower of pebbles behind us.

"So, you from around here?" Aiden smirked, looking in the rearview mirror at me, but Derek answered. I turned my head to look at the rich vegetation, oaks, and maples zooming past.

"I'm from New York," Derek answered him short, eyeing a warning.

"And where are you from?" Aiden asked, looking me directly in the eye when I glanced at him.

"Let's cut the crap!" Derek said before I could answer, his emerald eyes flaring. "The girl's with me, got it?"

"Hey …" Aiden said, smiling, holding up a hand in surrender while keeping the other on the wheel. "I was just making small talk …"

"And don't bother anyone else in our group either," Derek added, his fists balling. I rubbed his arm in a calming motion.

"Whatever you say," Aiden answered, laughing, as he exchanged a look at Chris, his brother, suppressing a laugh in the passenger seat beside him.
