Chapter 41: The Greatest Gift, Part 1

"Let's go!" Derek yelled over his shoulder just as more insurgents ran out of the school into the courtyard, and then lined up along the fence row. It would be a matter of minutes before they would come around the fence into the woods after us.

Lined up along the fence row, the insurgents were easy targets, so I couldn't resist taking down a few more, when Derek gently tugged at my arm.

"Let's get Timmy and get out of here," Derek said, looking into my eyes.

I nodded, and turned away, not able to meet his gaze.

"Go with him to the cave and we'll cover you," Derek said, as he leveled his rifle at the wall of insurgents.

I nodded, not saying a word, then quickly retreated and headed toward Timmy, still sleeping under the tree with Brandon and Stacey, Trevor's sister, by his side. Brandon was armed with nothing more than a knife, but I knew he would give his life to protect Timmy for me. He already proved it at the school.
