Chapter 62: Bittersweet Reprieve, Part 3

Later that afternoon, I checked on my mother and brought her a sandwich and a glass of iced tea. When I first walked in, she was sleeping, so I gingerly set the plate and tea on the nightstand beside the bed. I had just turned around and had the door open when I heard Mom say, "Hey, there."

"Okay," she replied.

She nodded. "Yes, I think it's about time. Do you mind?"

"Not at all," I said, smiling. "Mom, I'm so happy that you're alive. When I saw you get shot …" I knelt down beside her bed as tears streamed down my cheeks.

"Shush," she said, stroking my hair. "I'm just glad you and Timmy are still alive, too." Then, she paused to think for a second, looking into my eyes. "I'm proud of you, sweetheart. You're taking care of your little brother and defending your country all at the same time."
