"Derek, we have to get out of here … now," I said, looking around. "Can you move?"
"I think so," he said. He tried to get to his feet, but quickly slid back down onto the ground.
"You're not going anywhere," I replied, catching his body before he hit the ground, but my hand was wet when I pulled it back from his chest. When I looked, it was covered in blood. "Derek, you've been shot!"
"Casey … go on without me," Derek said as his head lulled back.
"I'm not going to leave you!" I yelled into his face, as tears trickled down my cheeks. I tried pulling him up by his shirt collar, but was unsuccessful. I looked at Travis and Jada with pleading eyes. "Help me get him up!"
"Casey, we have to go," Jada said, looking around.
I looked at Travis, but he lowered his eyes, unable to meet my gaze. "She's right," Travis said in a low voice. "We have to go." Then he looked at me and added, "Come with us."
