Come Monday morning, I'm back at work wishing that I was still at home with Tallulah. The fact that I know she's not there proves little comfort.
I'm sat in my office at the new restaurant, The Conquering Nomad, with Jack. He's doing his best to bring me up to speed on everything I've missed, not only here but at our other restaurants and bars too.
"I'm sorry I left you in the lurch," I say when he's done.
"Don't be stupid." He glares at me. "Your girl needed you."
"What about your girl?" I ask cheekily.
Jack Vincent has been in love with the same girl for as long as I can remember, probably longer than I've known him, but he's yet to admit it.
"What girl?" he replies, not missing a second.
I don't say her name. I feel like there's an unspoken agreement between us that I won't push him on this topic.
"You should tell her you like her."
"I don't know what you're talking about, Thorpe."
