Chapter 33

Despite keeping himself to himself, Gilbert had been mocked relentlessly from the first day he walked into Merryweather. Every other inmate seemed to be part of a group. Even the other newbies, like him, had aligned themselves within a day. Not Gilbert, though. Nobody liked Gilbert. They knew what he had done and wanted nothing to do with him. He knew what they thought of him, so he stayed near the guards, expecting them to keep him safe. No such luck. They hated him more than the criminals did. Protesting innocence was pointless. That was what paedos and child killers always said. No one would ever believe a word that came out of his mouth. They looked at him with disgust and walked away whenever he approached them.
