"I've been to see Dr Horton." Tilly came over to sit on Johnny's bed. "He says recovery from a stroke depends on how much you believe you can do it."
Johnny smiled his new, lop-sided smile. "He told me that as well."
Tilly put her hands on her hips. "Well?"
"Well, what?"
"Are you going to get down to it and start trying? Or are you just going to lie in bed feeling sorry for yourself?"
Johnny started to laugh. "You don't give a chap much time to enjoy just having you around again, do you? All right, what do you want me to do?"
"Dr Horton said you need to do more physiotherapy. He says that you can come home as soon as you can walk with a stick."
Johnny raised his eyebrows. "Come home? He said that? He never said that before."
"You didn't have anyone to look after you before. Now, listen. This is what we're going to do."
And she outlined a plan of exercise far more rigorous than anything the physiotherapist had prescribed.
