Chapter 31: Emma

Emma pulled herself from her reading. She looked off into the distance, she couldn't believe what she was reading. The history in her father's writing was a complete surprise to her. She had never heard that her mother had been married before; she had never known her father volunteered for the war. In her mind and in all her memories, her parents had always been together.

Emma closed the book. The heat the engine had provided was gone, and the steel of the hood had become cold and uncomfortable. She stretched her legs out, trying to move the blood back to her feet. She slid off the car's hood, leaving the manuscript resting on the windshield. As her feet found the ground, she reached down, straightening her jeans, and then walked away from her car, out into the field.
