Claire Youmans first went to Japan in 1992 and was immediately captivated.  After years of travel and study, she continues to be charmed and amazed by a fascinating history and a culture that's both endearingly quirky and entirely unique. She is a retired lawyer who now lives in Tokyo. Her family, including her daughter and two grandsons, live in Seattle, USA.

In 2014, she started Tales of the Meiji Era with The Toki-Girl and the Sparrow-Boy's unparalleled blend of historical fantasy in the first book of the series, Coming Home.  She continues exploring the combination of history and folklore to share her love and fascination with a very different country and culture.

Yuta returned to the inn shortly after the evening practice finished. He'd had more wine than he was used to, and, though it was early, he wanted nothing more than a hot bath and sleep.


"Good evening, and welcome," Noriko said from her desk. Again, she tucked her book away. "How can I be of service?"


"The restaurant was excellent. Thank you for the recommendation. Is the bath available?"


"Yes, it is," Noriko said, rising. "I will bring towels. Your yukata kimono is in your room." The yukata kimono was at-home wear provided by inns and generally worn casually at one's lodgings and around the immediate neighborhood. She looked him up and down. Yuta felt slightly uncomfortable at that.


"If you like, leave your clothing out, and I will have it cleaned for you," Noriko said. "I will check the bath and wait for you here."
