Chapter 31: escape, part 3

It drifts in and out of the light of the corridor, hypnotizing as it floats in the air before me.I become entranced and before I know it, I hear a cold hard crash. The double steel doors are closed and Charlie is gone.

"They have him now," says Ralph."Now we wait."

"Will he return?" I ask.

"There's no telling. Some go through those doors and come back.Others, our lost friends, never come back," Ralph says as he lays in the corner of his cell. His blanket a tattered shred of what it used to be.

I stare at the double steel doors, waiting for them to open. But there is no sign of life. All I can hear is an occasional cry out for help or a whimper in the cell down the corridor. We all try to be brave. But this place, this prison, has taken its toll on us.
