The Towns of WALES, HOLLAND, and AURORA, ERIE COUNTY, NY

It was a Thursday, my afternoon off. It was the day after my dinner with Rick Reynard and nine days after my conference with Lys and her compadres. I had decided to get away from it all and fire out into the landscape on a long ramble - a bushwhack, as we call it - on a slick pair of waxless light touring skis. I had a reason to get out and go for it. I was not looking forward to the weekend.

At a boarding school, the faculty are surrogate parents. Somebody's got to be on the job 24-7. Every once in a while it's my turn. The worst duty imaginable was coming up. We call it, "Officer of the Day."
