"Oh, sure, great, insects," said Lys, still watching me. "You know something else? These guys had something sharp and bony growing in their upper throats, right around the back of the tongue. It was sort of a beak like on an octopus. Like a bolt-cutter at the front end of a conveyor belt. One had it a lot worse than the other. I don't think he could have talked if he'd wanted to. Ever hear of that?"

I looked about, gaping at the trees where they met the skyline and taking comfort in the refusal of the visual scene to suddenly spin itself into chaos. I looked back to ground-level to find the two women just watching me. "This is terrifying," I said.

"Walk with me," Lys said in a tone I could have mistaken for affection, starting back the way we came. I skied real slow beside her.
