If you ask me now for my explanation, I would say that Lys must have been back in Buffalo for some part of an investigation with the DEA. She had a Saturday night off, was out with a guy somewhere near - possibly even "the Tom" - got into a fight with him, pulled one of her 'Oh yeah?' moves, and made her way to my house, maybe even getting him to drop her off. That's a likely scenario, actually. Never without a backup plan.

At noon I started the drive to my cottage with a horde of mixed feelings. As a teacher I was used to those incorrigible kids so determined to be contrary that they even irritated the other kids. As if even negative attention was better than no attention, they invited the blows society gave them. I guess even pain was better than neglect.
