Chapter 174: The Q, Part 174

NARRATIVE of WARD COURIER, Continued

April, 2012

BUFFALO, NY

Ten feet inside the door was a sort of entryway, probably where the old-time guests had been relieved of their coats. Two white men were standing with their backs to the woodwork that I presume once held closets. One was a big, broad sixtyish man with medium-length grey hair and short grey beard. He was dressed in faded jeans and a heavy flannel shirt. The other guy was tall, too, but of a medium build. Bespectacled and fortyish, he had a ruddy complexion, aquiline features, short dark hair, and a short dark beard. He was in a denim jacket. Both were businesslike and friendly. It felt like they had been waiting for me.

"You better lock that door," I said. "There's trouble coming."
