I went through my impressions. It felt like one of those optical puzzles in the papers. You passed your eyes over the whole scene. You looked hard. You didn't spot some of the items. Then, after somebody pointed them out, you couldn't miss them every next time you looked.

I realized by retracing my memory that the man had been standing against the wall with his wooden weapon folded in his crossed arms. He had simply hidden where he stood. I first remembered seeing him about two seconds before he struck. Maybe my two new friends knew he was there, but I didn't. Neither had our late Whistler.
