EAST AURORA and SOUTH WALES, NY
At 9:30 one of us noticed that the staff outnumbered the diners. The evening felt like it was over, and we had avoided the big issues.
"Awful nice of you guys to come out and talk to us," said Rick.
"Yeah," I said as we prepared to get up. "Honored."
"Least we could do after all you've been through," said Bennett, studying the check. "We wanted to have some closure, off the record."
"We did want to try to meet like friends," said Evan Davis, "in a way that doesn't get to happen too often in cases like this."
'What case like this have you ever seen?' I thought about asking him. Davis seemed so much like a "Sarge" that I could see him as the string-puller behind the code-name Jonas had told me about so recently. But Davis was DEA and Jonas' team worked for CIA or FBI... If anything was what it seemed.
"What happened to all the Whistlers?" I said.
