A close call

The metals of the wind chimes clattered out of tune as we fumbled outside. In a moment, we had already crossed the street, joining the people gathered around the broken shards of glass from what seemed to be a bakery.

A man wearing an apron stood in the middle of the whispering and murmuring crowd. He took heavy breaths, both his hands clasped tightly on a knife. "I-It was there… the Phantom Thief came inside. When I came back from a quick delivery to a house nearby, I heard steps—but there was no one. So I… I locked the door behind me. He must've seen that I brought a knife with me so he had no choice but to escape through the window."

Panicked gasps waved through the onlookers beside us. Looking at the bakery, it was small with no other exit but the door. The Phantom Thief could've chose to attack the man but why—

"Calla!" Althea pulled me back to my senses.

Right, there was no room for thinking. She could still be nearby.
