The group of workers weren't really motivated. They lost their head quite a few months ago and were already very far behind regarding the previous estimated completion time for the project. Now, they were being given a young kid to oversee the project? Wasn't it the same as saying that they were giving up on it? They were internally depressed. It was quite likely that this would be the last project they would work on for this company… As such, they didn't really put much effort into showing him anything.
They took him around the workplace before showing him his own new office. It was just a desk with piles upon piles of documents upon it and a few digital screens along with holo-equipment. Ron didn't even know how to use those…It took him a few days to get familiar with just the wrist-com and those seemed rather tougher to get a hang of. He turned towards his now coworkers and asked them about the project again. They sighed as they pointed to the documents that formed a pile, more precisely those in a blue binder. One of them told him everything about the project was in there and he should be able to understand much better from that. Apparently, they all had their own dedicated tasks and didn't bother reading on the parts of their coworkers…
Whether that was good or bad, Ron wouldn't know. He had no experience with teamwork anyways. As he looked at the binder and the rest of the documents, he sighed. He had a lot to read. He turned towards the group. They certainly didn't look like a top team. It was depressing. These guys clearly weren't enjoying whatever they were working on at the moment. He knew the feeling very well and recognized with a single glance.
He was now the manager though, not a fellow worker. What could he even do in such a situation? What did the mine's manager did? He made a speech that bored everyone out of their minds then left to play with some delivery hookers… Could he do that? It was unlikely, he had no money. At least, for now. Even if he had the cash, Ron probably wouldn't do that either. Money was much more important to him. He wouldn't spend it on something like that since he had high hopes to find himself a cute wife.
That being said, he was facing a great problem right now. He had no fuckin clue about what to do. He pondered for a long while before he recalled the lesson on management he just had. Introductions were a must and clearly, those guys hadn't said much about themselves. He could start with that.
Satisfied with his idea, he told them: "It might take me some time to read through this and grasp our project. Meanwhile, you guys should prepare a real introduction of yourselves and what you do in the project"
The workers looked at each other unsure of what Ron expected. It's not like it really mattered, did it? They could just have Ron tell them what to do after he finished grasping the project from the files. Why would they need to introduce things? It wasn't part of their job. One of them asked Ron: "Mr. Morgensen, can you be a little more specific?"
Ron looked at the man who asked him the question. He wondered if the guy was dumb for a moment. Was it really difficult to find a way to introduce yourself? It wasn't?
Ron wondered how to answer this question and looked back at the pile of documents. He had signed a contract for only four-hour shifts and considering the big pile…It might take him a few days to vanquish this amount. He told them: "I'll give you three days to make a good presentation of who you are and what you do. That's what I meant. Any more questions?"
Another guy raised a hand and asked: "Do you want us to make holo-presentations?"
Ron turned towards him and replied: "Sure, if you want to. As long as it's well-done, anything's fine. I want to understand what you guys are doing"
A woman in the group frowned and pointed towards the pile: "Everything's in there though"
Ron turned to her and said: "Maybe, maybe not. Anyways, you guys get to it and I will do my part"
Then, Ron sent away the grumbling group and sat at his desk with a smile. It was quite enjoyable to be the boss. Authority was addictive to someone new to it. Especially when one was young and allowed to order around a bunch of older folks. Ron loved the taste he got from it.
As he sat behind the desk, he took in the sight of the hangar filled with randomly strewn about pieces of things. It was messy, unclean and smelled rather bad but it was his own hangar which he was responsible for. It was a new work. A respectable one. Compared to being a miner, this seemed to be a dream. He couldn't help grinning foolishly.
He succeeded.
He was truly beginning a new life worth living. All thanks to those gems he stumbled across back then…
Still, he didn't remain in this trance for long. There was a big pile of documents for him to read. He wasn't quite the reader since he never had books after leaving the orphanage for the mines but he had no choice this time.
He picked the blue binder, opened it and he began to take out the papers. He checked the first one and… Rubbish. That's what he was reading. A quarter of the words weren't even familiar to him. Pipe redirection, Aerial augments, Fuel Rendition… Bunch of incomprehensible sentences were popping up one after another. It soon became obvious to him that he was lacking. He was lacking knowledge, far too much. There was no way he could even understand any of this.
Since he reached this conclusion, he decided to give up. That's right, he gave up. Since he couldn't understand, he wouldn't waste time trying. Instead, he simply faked reading it and was instead having fun reading humoristic things through his wrist-com.
He would wait for the workers to make their presentation. It would be easier. He congratulated himself on having had a brilliant idea before going back to the hilarious comics.
