Emotion? I'm not here to write poetry, I'm here to write a book! Yes, I know, it might seem a little bizarre for someone who is brand-spanking new to writing about characters. But, anyone who knows even a little bit about writing should know that you don't need a computer to write a book. You don't need paper or pencil or anything except imagination and emotion. Imagination is next week though, so we'll leave imagination right here.
Think about a beautiful female lead, she can have whatever you want on her. Now, imagine her personality. Is she bold, is she shy? Is she mean, is she nice? Is she noticed by everyone, or is she noticed by no one? Now think of her without her personality, tell me, would you want to write or read about her then?
The book has to flow, the words have to flow, the author has to flow! At least when writing. Here is another example, think about your friends. Do they make you laugh? Do they make you happy? Now think about if they didn't make you happy. Would you still want to be friends with them? Now take that same feeling in acquaintance with a book.
Haven't you ever stumbled across a book that has a great plot and great character, but the characters were all so stiff it made it hard to read? Take this book, If I didn't but the little jokes or get off of track and just got straight to the point- now that I think about it that sounds like a better tactic, but that's beside the point. The effort I put in to try to connect with my viewers is noticed, is it not? I just did it there, doesn't it make this more enjoyable to read?
Now, I will write something stiff versus something flowy, and you'll be able to instantly spot the difference.
She sat down quietly and waited.
She was waiting so quietly it almost killed her.
Do you see the difference? Which girl would you want to read about the first or second one?
Right, now that the lesson is over, I want you to write down the first thing that comes to mind and give it life. Whether it is a flying pen or barking pig, write it down and make it enjoyable. See you next week!
