What am I

I could have slept for two or three days...had it not been for two tiny dragons whining for attention. Raising these two in a cave was much easier than raising the other eight. For one they could get water when they wanted to because there were pools of water everywhere from the waterfall, and my cave was naturally covered in their prime diet. Like any babies though, they wanted attention, and couldn't blame them there. The more dragonesk I got, the less mommy motivated I had become. Was this why dragons didn't care for their young? Were they simply not in the mood? I know these guys might be a hassle, but I would still kill for them no questions asked. I was still keeping a log on their behavior, excrement, and growth. I put each one in my pocket and walked to the houses where my DNA testing would be. I petted and scratched Nymph and Wisp while I walked, and at some point they had climbed to my shoulders. I came close to the houses and saw one of those big trucks that advertised donating blood. I walked up to Mabel who was quietly watching everything. "I know I said I would get testing, but this seems a bit extreme." I said. Mabel jumped, as she didn't see me coming. She held her chest "Can you announce yourself first next time. Turning around two see a three headed monster with horns and glowing yellow eyes can be a bit startling." she said with a hint of sarcasm.

"It could be worse." I said.

"How?" she asked gingerly.

"Girls smile." I said to Nymph and Wisp. Both dragons grinned revealing bright white needle-like teeth just floating slightly below their glowing yellow eyes.

"Yep your right you just made it worse." she said. Both of the Shadow Sights chirped in laughter.

"Can you talk to them yet?" Mabel asked.

"Well they are only a day old, so no. but since Shadow Sights reach full maturity at a month old I should be able to talk to them sooner than the others; who were still fairly small at a month old.

Just then a skinny man with thin brown hair, large bulky glasses, and a bow tie walked up to me. I could tell he was the type of man who had regular swirlies and wedgies growing up. "We are going to be doing some testing today, personally I think you are just a human...with a strange taste in implants." he said in a snobbish tone. I looked down at my chest as he said implants. I punched him hard, but not to hard enough to do any real damage. He was on the ground with a quickly forming black eye. "I meant your horns." he said looking at the ground trying not to make me angry.

I sighed and rolled my eyes. Nymph and Wisp were laughing at him circling his bruised body on the ground. I could tell he was nervous around my devilish duo. They were they size of hamsters; what did he think they could possibly do. "So little man, how do I prove to you that I am not the human you think I am?" I asked, playing with him. He was obviously scared, but he was doing his best to act unaffected. Mabel looked conflicted, she wasn't sure if she should save the idiot who was digging his own grave, or sit back and enjoy the show.

"Uhhm well...That punch didn't seem super human before. Punch something hard and prove to me you have unbelievable strength." he said. I looked him dead in the eye and cracked my knuckles. "Okay." I said, "I love hitting things." I slowly walked towards him for every step I took forward he took backwards. This poor man looked like he was going to pee himself. and the two toothy smiling shadows on my shoulders weren't helping him. Finally I had him pinned against the tree. I pulled my arm back, clenched my fist, and swung. The man covered his face and squealed like a girl. Then he heard CRACK, the noise sounded all through the forest. I had punched the tree right above his head. He stood in utter shock, his knees were shaking. My hand went threw the tree, and now the tree was beginning to fall. I threw the man over my shoulder, and ran full speed to the house where we watched the tree hit the ground. I dropped the man who was utterly shocked. His eyes were wide open and his mouth was hanging open slightly. He got up silently looking like a ghost, then I could hear the sound of vomiting as he turned the corner out of sight.

"You didn't have to be so mean." Mabel said, though the smile on her face betrayed as her words.

"I don't get to have fun like that often. These two enjoyed it, and you guys knew me before I got too scary, so you know I would only kill someone over my dragons." I said.

She shrugged her shoulders. It was a scary truth, but one she had gotten used to. She had been the first person to be attacked by my dragons, luckily for her they were still the size of dogs then.

"Ms.Jenkins please come into the trailer, we are ready for blood tests." A man in a lab coat said, jesturing me to the back of the trucks trailer. The doors to the back of the trailer were wide open, and inside was a surprisingly high tech clinic of sorts. I sat down and prepared to feel a needle go into my arm. I could raise and fight a dragon sure, but needles made me squeamish. I turned my head to avoid seeing the needle go into my arm. However all I felt was something poking my skin, not puncturing. I turned my head and looked to the man who had been trying to draw my blood, but saw him holding a bent needle. He tried to puncture my arm with several different medical devices, but my skin seemed to break all of them. "Okay Ms. Jenkins, it appears that drawing blood with a needle is not going to work. Do you have any ideas?" the man asked. I am pretty sure a bite from one of these guys would do the trick," Nymph and Wisp popped out of my pockets, "but it might contaminate my blood sample." I said.

"If it's our only option, than we can just clean the wound while it is still bleeding, and collect the blood as it comes. I picked up Wisp and put her on my wrist. "I will bleed more if she bites here." I said. The man was about to argue, but Wisp bit into my wrist. It started bleeding heavily, like I knew it would, and the puncture holes were small due to my tiny dragon's tiny bite. The man collected blood in several vials, before he rubbed some medical pastey stuff on my wrist, and wrapped it. He handed me a cookie and some orange juice, and pointed me to a different man in the trailer. "That is Steve, he is going to examine your horns. I walked to the back of the trailer, and sat down next to the man called Steve.

"This won't take long, I am just going to scrape a tiny bit of one of your horns into this petri dish, then, I will measure them, and catalog all of the findings I see. after about twenty minutes of this guy fiddling with my horns and scalp; he told me to go to the tent outside. I don't remember there being a tent, but I was glad to get out of that chair. I walked out of the trailer, and sure enough the DDP had set up a large canopy tent with different types of machines I walked in amazed at their efficiency. "Hello Ms.Jenkins." A tall man said looking down at me. "First we are going to test your speed." he walked me to a treadmill. I looked at him, "What do you think I am?" I said. He looked at me confused "That's what we are trying to figure out." he said in questioning voice.

"Hahaha ha!" I heard from behind us. It was coming from Mrs.Horn. "Honey she means she will break that treadmill if you try to make her run full speed." she said. The man looked confused. "Honey so far I have clocked her fastest at forty mph there is no way that that treadmill will do anything." she finished. The man's jaw dropped. I looked at him with a small smile. He turned around and talked to a man a few steps behind us. Soon the treadmill was being packed up, and a few men were measuring my driveway so I could run it. "Next was a strength test. I walked over and put one of my fists clean through a sand bag, letting sand spill everywhere. They put me under a machine that would slowly increase pressure. I would stand and lift a metal plate up, and see how much pressure it would take before I could no longer keep it above my head. We got to 346lbs of pressure before my arms finally gave out. Everybody looked at me as though I had grown a second head.. Onto the next test

next dozens of wires were glued to my head for an EEG, and some to my chest for an EKG. Then they had me change my eyes without talking to my dragons, then with me talking to my dragons. A man shown a bright light into my eyes the entire time. Then they wanted to see me talk to my dragons mentally from short and long distances. After I was done doing test talks with my dragons; next was my sense of smell, hearing, and sensing of emotions. Then I got to talk about how temperature no longer effected me, and how I could sleep for days without eating. I also had to talk about how I felt towards my dragons. After all of the glue and wires were taken off of me, the group of DDP scientists was ready for my speed test. I smiled at the scrawny man who I had scared earlier. I put Nymph and Wisp on the ground, and took off. When I got back everyone was either amazed and clapping, or writing on a clipboard. Wisp and Nymph climbed up my legs and into my pockets.

-------The Next Morning

I woke up and began my walk to Bill's house for breakfast; as soon as I left my cave I could smell everything that I had from the day before. "Uhh they stayed overnight. Maybe they will give me results and go away." I said to no one in particular. "Do you want me to freeze them Mama." I heard Coruscant say. "No need Coruscant they are only annoying, not a threat." I sighed and kept walking through the forest until everything was visible. There were a dozen tents pitched in my front yard. Vainglorious was dancing and strutting, showing off his feathers for all of the scientists and DDP agents. As soon as Vainglorious saw me I heard "They all think I am beautiful Mama." he said, not stopping his dance. "That is because you are beautiful little one." I said back through my mind, not wanting to steal away his attention by speaking out loud. Then Callalilly popped through the forest into the crowd of people with her flower garden frill displayed. That got several oohs and awws. "Mama she is stealing my audience." Vainglorious said irritated. "It is her turn now little one. Come show the hatchlings your flair, I am sure they would love to see you." I told him. I put Nymph and Wisp on the ground, and walked into Bill's house where the usual crowd was, plus two scientists. One of the men look like he could be my grandfather, and the other looked like he was in his early twenties. The older man started talking Well Ms. Jenkins it a..." Before the older man could speak anymore the younger scientist blurted out. "You have twenty-six chromosomes!" immediately he covered his mouth. "Well there you go Mrs.Horn, humans have twenty-three chromosomes, which means no babies for me. We have also noted that your metabolism is extraordinarily slow, which is odd, being as you eat the same amount of food as any human." The older man said. "So what kind of importance does that have? Do I need to just watch what I eat?" I asked.

"No actually given how fast your cells replicate, and how slow your metabolism is...you could potentially live for hundreds of years." He said shyly. Then everyone went silent. Even the tiny dragons in my pockets seemed stunned.

"Your metabolism rivals that of gigantic tortoises, and they are able to live up to around five hundred years." The older man said again. No body else spoke a single word. "No!" I yelled. Then bolted out the door.

Some people would be happy to be able to live that long, however, I knew that living that long would mean that I would watch everyone I love die. I never even wanted to be one of those people in the paper that celebrate their hundred and first birthday. I ran and ran until I saw Somnolent asleep in a field. I plopped next to him, and leaned my chest and body into his side. He could tell I was sad, and he wrapped his tail around me. Soon other dragons came. All of them stayed silent, but did their best to comfort me. Even Wisp and Nymph were rubbing their soft furry bodies on my cheeks, and licking my tears away. Would I have to watch my dragons die too? Somehow that felt worse than watching my human family and friends. Why me?
