'Mom, are you alright?'

'Am I alright?' She gasped, stroking the feathers on my wings.

'That one's a long story, but I do need to talk to you about something else when we get out of here.'

'There'll never be a better moment than now,' she waved at the gathering people below. 'We all heard your voice in our heads, and I can tell it's huge by the look on your face.'

'But we don't have time to-'

'Jake Goodwin, You're going to make time!'

And here I was, thinking nothing scared me any more. 'You're right, mom. Sorry. I'd been trying to work out how to tell you. Dad-'

'I know he's dead,' strangely, my mother wasn't upset, or if she was, she was doing a masterful job at keeping her emotions in check. 'There's no good way of finding out your husband was killed.'

'Are you sure you're alright?'

She frowned. 'I think so.'
