Almost Assured Destruction

No sooner had the Merman-Human hybrid ordered his rabble of sailor friends to close on me, did a horn call. It was a sound so deep and reverberating that our small ship rocked from side to side. And the second it stopped, we had only another brief pause before it started again.

The person I assumed was Anton blinked in confusion, but his eyes filled with sudden resolve as the musical notes washed over him. Then he ran past his comrades and leapt into the ocean as if in a hurry to get somewhere. I took the opportunity to climb atop the cabin; in any battle, the higher ground was always best to defend. At least that had been my experience.

'Where did it go? We haven't finished the hunt.'

'What hunt?' I had to ask.
