Ron opened his eyes once more. He noticed the stretcher he was lying on and the red cross that was on the curtain next to him and realized he was in the infirmary. He had no memory of what happened after he met a girl named Ellen. The curtain then slid open and a woman walked in dressed as a nurse.
She looked different from the other people he had met here. Her hair was completely white, long, and stretching to almost below her back. She had a small beautiful childish pale face with very green eyes that if Ron stared at her any longer he had a feeling he would turn to stone.
In her hands, she was holding a clipboard that was having his information from the medical tests they had run on him when he was unconscious.
"Hello Ron, am doctor Cassie." She said. Her voice was so soft and pleasant. "You were brought here by a female student saying that you were attacked in the woods by a pack of wolves."
"Wolves?" Ron checked himself for bite marks, but his body was uninjured.
"Yes, Ron, wolves a whole pack of them," Cassie continued. "But lucky for you, your body was able to heal itself overnight." she ran her hand through her hair and Ron caught a glimpse of her pointed ears that were immediately covered up again by the white hair. She was an elf. The nurse was an elf.
He thought he would never see the day. The day he saw a real-life elf. This was a real fantasy come true.
And the girl?" he asked, "Where is she?"
"Ellen left hours after bringing you here. But we called your roommate lord Nathan to come to pick you up." Cassie said, then started to look through the test results they had taken on him
Her eyes widened, "Fascinating, you are completely human. No demigod history or connection to the Valkyries." She muttered.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you are human one hundred percent, but also god slayer one hundred percent. We ran about one hundred tests on you last night and that is the best we could come up with. The rest are theories."
Theories like…"
You may be a god or a giant in disguise. Or a gift from the Yggdrasil itself." She whispered on the last one.
The Yggdrasil? What the hell is that?"
The nurse cautiously looked around to see if no one was overhearing this conversation, "We light elves believe that world tree Yggdrasil is dying." she said. "When most of the gods died the tree lost most of its leaves. Worlds grew weaker and started to crumble down, like my homeworld Alfheim, when Freyr was betrayed by the Vanir. But before her death, she left us a prophecy, it said…."
Cassie was interrupted by Nathan's sudden intrusion.
Your majesty," Cassie quickly stood. She bowed her head and Nathan nodded, then she quickly left.
Ron continued to stare at her even when she was gone. That was that she was just talking about Yggdrasil, the world tree, Alfheim, and the Vanir. He had never heard of those things all his fourteen years of life. He wasn't the kind of person that was so interested in mythology and gods. He knew about the Valkyrie who were a group of women who served Odin.
"C'mon. let's go." Nathan stood next to the curtain, "Orientation starts at eight o'clock." he lifted his and looked at his wristwatch, "which is twenty minutes from now." Nathan said.
Ron pulled himself from the stretcher, grabbed his jacket. Then followed Nathan as they left the infirmary. As he left Cassie was staring at him like she did want him to leave. As If his life was in danger if he followed Nathan out the door.
Maybe it was the events from last night that made him feel more cautious of his surroundings. He had to see Ellen and find out what happened on his first night. Was he attacked by wolves? And why didn't he remember and what was he doing in the forest to get attacked by wolves in the first place?
They left the sick bay and entered the academy grounds. No one was in uniform since it was a Saturday and no classes took place on Saturday. The school was the scenery of its own from his point of view. The trees were evergreen along with the grass. The school had fine structures that looked like they were built during the middle ages. Ron could see students moving around some wearing backpacks others holding swords, the rest seated in the grass practicing magic or talking and laughing. There were students of all ages. Whether teenagers like him or older than him like Nathan and Aurora.
Speaking of Aurora, she appeared out of nowhere and kissed Nathan like she didn't know Ron was with him.
"Morning Ron, I can't believe you got hurt on your first day." she began.
"I was just hungry man, I took the wrong turn I guess."
Next time use your Altaen crystal. It can help you navigate your way around the school."
"He doesn't have a crystal yet," Nathan corrected her, "he's a human remember."
That hurt his feelings a bit, but Nathan was right. He didn't have a crystal because he wasn't born from royalty already knowing that he's a god slayer.
Oh. Yeah." She looked around and noticed other first years in a crowd that was being led by Ellen. "I guess orientation already started," she said.
Ron turned to see. And the first person he saw was Ellen standing in front of the group, smiling and pointing around the school.
He quickly ditched Nathan and Aurora, then ran towards Elena.
He grabbed her by the hand, "What happened last night?" he didn't realize he had said that out loud. The entire group laughed.
Ellen looked at him. She lowered her eyebrows, then forced a smile and faced the crowd, "May you all please excuse me." she requested and the group scattered to give the two some space.
"Can't you see I was in the middle of something." there was anger in her voice as she tried to keep it down.
"I know what happened last night Ellen I know it wasn't a pack of wolves," Ron said
Ellen sighed and slapped her forehead.
"Of course, it wasn't a pack of wolves," she said, "we will talk about this later around four o'clock, meet me in the forest."
You know where." The last sentence didn't come from her mouth. It had come from his mind, she had somehow whispered that in his mind.
He slowly released her hand and she turned from him.
'And if you tell any of your friends or come with them. I won't hesitate to kill them." she said before she continued back to the group.
She sounded so serious and dark like she would do so. It was better he listened and do she had said.
It was four O'clock and he was already in the woods trying to figure out where she meant by he will know. In his head, he kept on having flashes of a lake in his mind. Those flashes came out to be memories of the lake that was located in the middle of the forest. But he didn't know where to pass so he just followed his gut. Through the thick bushes and just like magic he suddenly found himself next to the lake.
"I see you did not come with your friends." Ellen's voice sounded from behind.
He turned.
She was standing smartly facing him. Beside her was a big black wolf the size of an airplane, with frightful blue eyes staring and growling at him. He wanted to run away, but he had a feeling that the wolf would shove him down before he even reached the bushes he had used to come here.
"Who are you?" he asked.
Ellen shrugged, "I am also not sure these days, but you can call me Artemis." she replied. "And this.." she turned to the large wolf.
"Is Fenrir."
"Am sorry about last night. I had to be sure if you are one of us," she said.
One of you? A god."
"No, a warrior."
"A warrior?" Ron was confused, he thought Artemis was the goddess of the moon. Well, at least that's what the teacher said during history class.
"Yes. Yggdrasil is dying and the nine realms will follow if you don't help us," she said.
Ron laughed, "If this is some first-year prank you got me okay." Ron smiled. "Making up all this just to fool the human, wow."
Ellen giggled, "You think this is some joke." she yelled and the atmosphere got tense. All the trees began to shake in response to her anger.
Ron took a few steps back in fear that he may be the wolf's lunch. He then felt the ground below him shake and it split into a crack right below him, from the crack he could hear screams of men and women from down. Help me!....please...those were a few screams he could hear before he dragged back still trembling in fear of what he had just seen seconds back,
"What. . .Was. . .That?"
"Proof that this isn't a prank. Ron Carter ."
