After a couple of hours, Adam came back to the hut with the promised materials. He had not planned to get anything out of the boar, but it was a welcomed surprise.
He needed to replace the spear that broke in the fight, and as any gamer could confirm, tiering up your gear was one of the best parts of the adventure. The new materials opened up options he did not expect to be able to cover for some weeks.
[System, what is your analysis of the fight? We need to decide how to improve my gear with these materials] asked Adam.
[Ideally, I could use a crossbow, but I do not have the materials to build one right now. The better ones also require some mechanical parts that I do not know how to make at the moment. I think we can create a bow or a long spear with what we have] answered Adam.
Adam sat down. The System was a big help designing and optimizing when he is creating gear, but it always goes slow due to all its gaps in knowledge. He sighed and decided the positives were much more than the negatives for this partnership.
[A bow is a flexible rod with a strong elastic strand. It should be shorter than the rod, making it bend. It uses arrows. Those are like tiny spears, optimized for air travel. With a bow, I'm confident in hitting a target 100 feet away] answered Adam.
Adam stood up and walked to an improvised workstation he had in the back of the hut. He had already placed all the materials there. He picked up and examined one of the bones he had gotten. It reached from the floor to his navel. To him, it seemed solid and inflexible.
[A crossbow uses the same principle. It used bolts instead of arrows. Everything is made smaller but harder. I don't think we can make one with the materials we have now. I plan to make a spear with this bone and reuse the bronze from the other two spears. Maybe a new shield with the back leather of the boar, with some of the bones as structure. Am I missing anything?] he asked.
After a couple of minutes of no answer, a new reply came up.
"OMG!!!" could be heard from the hut.
A couple of days later, Adam came to the plaza armed with a new spear and shield. Even though they were still roughly made, it is obvious they were better than what he wore to the last fight.
Yorky came running to his side, looking excited.
"You make more weapon?" Yorky asked.
Adam noticed all the attention was on him and Yorky. He did not think his appearance would be as important.
"Yes. I upgraded my things. Why is everyone looking at us?" answered Adam.
The little creature had his hands all over the place, seemingly not able to keep them still for more than a couple of seconds. Its ears were also flapping from side to side.
"Never have maker in tribe. All scavenged from dead we find. When breaks no replace here" It explained while looking at the spear on Adam's back.
For the next couple of weeks, Adam's importance in the tribe increased exponentially. It went from a tolerated guest to a defender and maker of items.
More and more Tengu sought Adam in his hut after he finished a shift in the plaza. They brought small broken pieces of metal, bones, and all kinds of scavenged things. Mostly useless.
Only when Yorky came to visit was Adam able to understand what they wanted from him and make deals. The change was apparent if one looked at the Tengus in the plaza. Half of them wore skirts made out of rough red fabric. Some of them even had short daggers and knives on leather belts.
This was a revolution in fashion for the Tengu. In the hut, Adam was no longer alone. A couple of smaller Tengu worked with him, slicing, preparing, and braiding the long grass fibers. Every couple of days, Adam fired up the forge and got everyone out. He was not ready to share the secrets of forging just yet.
