Frustration

In the past couple of weeks, Adam had participated in the defense team every day. He did not always have to fight during his shift, so he spent the waiting hours sitting on the plaza, talking to the System.

Adam had not dealt the last blow to any beast yet, but he got better and better with each fight. He had improved noticeably with the spear. The longer reach of the bone spear had helped Adam get increasingly critical hits while also reducing the danger.

For Adam, the most infuriating part whar that the Chief was skilled at finishing off the creatures. It seemed the big Tengu had a sixth sense for when and where to strike to kill the animals.

[I don't get it, System. What is his secret? How come he always deals the last blow?] complained Adam one afternoon after a rather fierce fight.

answered the System.

[Agreed on the weapon. This spear is better, but I still need to find a way to improve the damage. On your second point, I also take a step back and focus on the spots you point out. Meanwhile, he has made all the killing blows since I joined the team] answered Adam with a souring mood.

There was a short pause, and Adam saw a new message pop up.

Adam finished cleaning and storing his gear in a decidedly worst mood than before. The System had developed this sarcastic humor that always jarred Adam. He did not know if it was a reflection of his own or something that the crystal already had inside when Irulan gave it to him. His assistants in the hut-turned-workshop noticed when he was in these moods and made sure to try not to call attention to themselves. Adam was no slave driver, but he was also not running a spa.

[Did you record the profile for today's beast?] asked Adam.

[Show me] replied Adam.

Descendants of plant-eating animals, this specimen's fangs show that it has adjusted his diet for meat consumption. From the front, it uses its horns and fangs to attack its victims. From the back, its only resource is kicking the enemy. Its main weaknesses are its unprotected flanks>

This description jolted Adam's memory. At the moment, he had not noticed, but he now remembered that the Chief went directly for the creature's flank while he went for the eyes, as it was his most common tactic.

This realization brought a seed of doubt to Adam, which rapidly grew to worry and was borderline panic in the next couple of minutes.

"Bring Yorky" said Adam while facing one of the workers.

Even though they could not understand him, it was now common practice that they should go and find this weird Tengu whenever Adam said its name.

After a couple of minutes, two Tengus enter the hut, the one who left plus Yorky. It seemed Yorky had been interrupted as he still had a greasy piece of meat on his hand.

"You call?" asked the Tengu.

Adam grabbed the Tengu and sat him forcefully near one of the tables in the workshop. He then graved a piece of wood from the fire, which had already turned one of its ends to charcoal, and gave it to Yorky.

"Do you remember the beast we killed today?" asked Adam with intensity.

The small Tengu looked up at Adam and slowly blinked its large eyes.

"Yes. Big fangs. Stripes on skin. Scary" answered Yorky while shaking a little.

Then Adam shoved the piece of wood on Yorky's hand and pointed at a free spot on the table.

To Adam's surprise and dismay, the drawing Yorky made looked like a black and white HDMI photograph of the beast.
