Chapter 12

The next morning they all woke up and came down to eat breakfast.

"So last day of school, what are you going to do?" asked Walker.

"I don't know maybe ask Haskel and Martha if they want to come over and spend time over here for the summer before school starts again," said Peter.

"That would be great, next year you all will be seniors," said Karen.

"Yeah that is right," smiled Peter.

"So have you talked to the elders?" asked Eagle Bear.

"Yes, I've also been practicing with them while I'm on the reservation, they say I have a rare gift," said Peter.

"That is great, here is some toast to go since we are running late today," said Karen.

"Thank you, we all better hurry and get dressed," laughed Walker.

They all headed upstairs to get dressed, Walker was finished first, so he went out and started the truck. They drove half-way and dropped Peter off at the bus stop and the bus came and picked him up and drove to the school. When they arrived they went into the school and went to there classrooms.

"So how are you liking it so far, going to the gym to practice with the hand drum singers during lunch?" asked Haskel.

"It's great," smiled Haskel.

Jesse was getting mad and overhearing their conversation.

"Peter, Haskel," said the teacher.

So they faced the front and started doing there work again. Then the bell rang and it was time for lunch. Peter packed his stuff and went out of the school. He walked towards the gym on the reservation to practice but he almost didn't make it.

As all the kids in the cafeteria were eating. Haskel and Martha were in line getting their plates. They noticed something was not right, they had a funny feeling as they were walking to there table.

"I don't feel right," said Martha.

"I know what you mean sister," said Haskel.

"Where's Jesse," concerned Martha.

Haskel quickly turned and Jesse's hole table was empty. Jesse and his buddies were not at there table.

"Now I'm worried," said Martha.

"Let's go," Haskel jumping up from the table and running out.

As Peter was walking to the gym with his hand drum and stick on his shoulder, he looked up and saw an eagle soaring, then it cried and Peter quickly turned around and saw Jesse and his boys running after him. Peter took off, he started running towards the gym. He saw a 6ft tall traditional native standing in the doorway, the man uncrossed his arms and saw Peter running and Jesse and his boys right behind. Peter made it to the gym and quickly ran inside.

"Hey you guys go home," said the man.

"We almost had you, Peter, this is not over, we'll get you soon enough, I'll get you," said Jesse.

"Get out of here," said the man.

Jesse just smiled at Peter and pointed and walked away with his buddies.

"Come on Peter, were waiting," smiled the guy.

"Thanks, I thought those guys were going to pound me," said Peter.

"Na, not while I'm here, and besides you might surprise them," said the guy.

So they walked into the gym and Peter ran upstage.

"Alright you guys you ready?" asked the elder.

"Yes," said another man.

So they started singing. When they were finished, they all went to the booth to grab something to eat and drink, they started a conversation. The elders started talking as well.

"That boy is special," said the elder.

"Yes, he has the face of our ancestors, he will go far in the community," said another elder.

"Yes he will, he knows the language very well and our ways, he's going to be the one the younger generation looks up to," said the elder.

"Yes, he's going to keep the stories and the traditions alive while we are no longer here," said the elder.

"Yes," said the other elder.

Back at the food table.

"Do you need help getting home?" asked the man.

"No I think I will be okay, thank you though," said Peter.

"Look, there is Jesse and his guys behind the building," said Martha.

"Let's go inside quick and warn Peter," said Haskel.

So Martha and Haskel ran into the building.

"Peter," said Martha.

"Hey guys, what's up," said Peter.

"Don't go outside, Jesse and his friends are waiting behind the building," said Haskel.

"What," said Peter.

"Yeah we saw them, and ran in here to tell you," said Martha.

"I better go with you to the bus stop then," said the man.

"Okay, thank you, thank you, Haskel and Martha," said Peter.

So they all packed up and went out of the building. Jesse hears the door open he walks out from behind the building and saw the tall man with Peter.

"Darn it, Peter, I'll get you someday when you least expect it," said Jesse smiling.

They arrived at the bus stop, Jesse and his friends got in the very back and slid down in the seats. When the bus dropped all the native kids off, Jesse and his buddies were still on the bus hiding. They wanted to see where Peter lived.

"Alright Peter, this is your stop," said the bus driver.

"Thank you," said Peter.

"Your welcome," said the bus driver.

"Let's go out the back," said Jesse.

So they went out the back and gently closed the door and the bus drove off. Eagle Bear was looking and saw what that boy did, then he looked at Peter and was watching Jesse.

Peter had a funny feeling and quickly turned around and there were Jesse and his friends at the end of his driveway.

"So this is where you live, it's nice, your living good, you think you have it better don't you?" angered Jesse.

"No, I don't, I am just blessed that is all," Peter walking further up the driveway.

"Don't walk away from me," said Jesse.

"Don't come on my property, my dad is the Sheriff," said Peter.

"Oh wow, I'm so scared," laughed Jesse.

"You'll end up in jail someday Jesse, you wait and see," said Peter.

"Why you say that?" asked Jesse.

"I know people like you, I see it every day when I go on the reservation to my practices," said Peter walking away.

"I said don't walk away from me," said Jesse turning Peter around and punched him in the face he fell on his hands and knees.

Eagle Bear just watched.

Peter lifted his head, and all of sudden men and women were singing and drums pounding, then growling. He didn't know he was growling, he got up and turned around, looked into Jesse's eyes and Jesse started getting afraid, then Peter started punching him and he went down to the ground, and Peter was on top of Jesse growling and punching him, then Jesse's friends got in and they all got hit as well, Jesse's friends got back up and came after Peter again, then Eagle Bear came running out.

"That is enough," yelled Eagle Bear.

The men and women singing and the howling and drumming went away.

"Peter, that's enough come on sonny," said Eagle Bear getting Peter off of Jesse.

"You guys leave my property right now," pointed Eagle Bear.

They got up and stared at Eagle Bear then back at Peter.

"This ain't over yet Peter, you'll get yours, and you won't have anybody to protect you," said Jesse running off.

"Come on sonny, let's go inside," smiled Eagle Bear who knew what happened, he crossed over to the spirit world.

"Great, now they know where I live," said Peter sitting down at the table.

"Yeah, but you're not going to let that scare you," said Eagle Bear.

"No," said Peter.

"Good," said Eagle Bear.

Eagle Bear was getting the first aid kit down from the cabinet. He grabbed an alcohol towelette and wiped Peter's face and nose from the blood coming out of his nose, then he pulled a gauze out and held it to Peter's nose, he told Peter to hold it while he puts the first aid kit up. Then Karen and Walker drove up the driveway and came inside. They put their stuff down and walked into the kitchen.

"Sweetheart are you alright," Karen walking fast over to him.

"Yes mom, I'm okay, just got into a scuffle in the driveway," said Peter.

"What happened son," said Walker going over to him and pulling his hand away from his face.

"Remember that kid I was telling you about, well he didn't get off the bus on the reservation, they hid in the back of the bus. When the bus driver stopped at my place they got out of the back of the bus and started to follow me. Then I turned around and there he was and his buddies," said Peter.

"Come on sweetheart and let's go change your clothes so I can wash your shirt and pants," said Karen helping him upstairs.

"Sorry mom, I got blood on my clothes," said Peter.

"It is quite alright, I'm just glad you are okay," said Karen.

"He crossed over into the spirit world," said Eagle Bear.

"Did he notice," said Walker.

"No, but I did," said Eagle Bear.

"You're going to talk to him like you did me when I was young," smiled Walker.

"Yeah," smiled Eagle Bear.

Peter went into the restroom to change his clothes when he changed his clothes he looked into the mirror. He pulled the gauze away from his nose.

"I think it's okay now," Peter looking at his nose.

Karen turned his lamp on and Peter came out of the restroom.

"Here's my clothes mom," said Peter.

"Thank you, sweetheart, I'll put them in the basket. Come here sweetheart, let me look at you," said Karen.

She looked at him and smiled, checked his nose. Kissed him on the forehead.

"Come down for supper, I'm making spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread and green beans," said Karen.

"Okay, that sounds good," said Peter.

Karen picked his basket of clothes and took them down to the laundry room. Peter got up from his bed and turned his desk lamp on and started to write to his foster families again. As he was writing his letter Eagle Bear came up and walked in.

"Hey, Peter can I talk with you," asked Eagle Bear.

"Sure you can," said Peter getting up and sitting on his bed.

"Do even know what happened today," asked Eagle Bear.

"What do you mean, Jesse and his friends beating up on me," said Peter.

"Yes, did you feel different,?" asked Eagle Bear.

"No I didn't, " said Peter.

"Well I did, you crossed over into the spirit world," said Eagle Bear.

"What? I did," said Peter.

"Yes, crossing into the Spirit world is a very powerful thing, they have chosen you, figure out why they call you?" asked Eagle Bear.

"But I'm no medicine man, I thought they had to deal with this," said Peter.

Eagle Bear just laughed. "Come on let's go down and get ready for supper."

"Okay," smiled Peter.

They went downstairs and supper was on the table ready. They all sat down and started eating and talking.

"Oh my, its already 10:00 pm. We all better get to bed," said Karen.

"I'll clean up for you all," said Eagle Bear.

"Thank you Eagle Bear," said Karen.

"Your welcome," said Eagle Bear getting up and doing the dishes.

Karen, Walker, and Peter went upstairs and went to sleep.
