The next morning, Haskel and Martha woke up to pack up their belongings and headed home, because on Monday they start school, they are going to be seniors this year.
"Well see you tomorrow," said Haskel.
"Yes, I'll see you guys tomorrow morning at the bus," said Peter.
"Bye," said Martha.
Haskel and Martha rode away back to the reservation. When they were riding there bikes down the street, they noticed a few Indian kids that had dry mud on their shoes. They both looked at each other.
"Jesse," said Haskel.
"Oh my, that is not good at all," said Martha.
"Yeah, to think, if Peter went by himself to check out the cabin, Jesse probably would have caught him and beat him up," said Haskel.
"Now I am glad that we all went together," said Martha.
"Me too, come on let's go home," said Haskel.
So they went to there house and put their stuff up and went to the youth gym and played games and had some snacks and music was playing as well.
Back at the ranch. Peter was sitting outside on the steps thinking about who could have come on the property, or who even knew about that spot.
"Hey son, what's up?" asked Walker.
"Oh nothing, I was just thinking about who could have done that," said Peter.
"Don't worry about it son, no real damage was done, nothing was stolen, when you get home from school tomorrow we can go back and redo the bed and straighten up the room.
"Okay dad," said Peter.
So they both went back inside and went to bed. The next morning was Monday, it was time for Peter to go to school, the last day of his senior year in high school.
"So are ready for school," smiled Karen.
"Yeah, I can't believe I am a senior this year," said Peter.
"Me either son," said Walker.
They finished eating breakfast and off they went to drop him off at the bus stop.
"Have a great day," said Karen.
"I will," said Peter.
Jesse and his buddies were standing there also just smiling. Peter looked over and saw Haskel and Martha walking up.
"Hey," said Martha.
"Hey," said Peter.
The bus came, all the kids got on the bus and it drove them to school. Everybody jumped off the bus and ran inside the building to get to there classes. In class the young teens were doing there work, then the teacher stepped out for a bit.
"Hey Peter, told ya, one day I'll get ya," said Jesse.
"What do you mean get me," said Peter.
"Remember a long time ago, I said wait until we get older I'll get you," said Jesse.
"Yeah I remember, but I am the same height and built as you are Jesse, but I am not looking to fight with anyone, not even you," said Peter.
"Don't worry, I'll get you when you least expect it," smiled Jesse.
"Dude, grow up," said Haskel.
Then the teacher walks back in.
"Alright class, we need your help in something," said the teacher.
They all started talking and murmuring to themselves.
"Does anyone now where Walker lives," asked the teacher.
Nobody raised there hands, not even Jesse.
"Okay, well someone from the reservation as been going on Walkers property without permission, now you know Walkers property line is on the edge of our reservation, and on that line, there is an old log cabin that was used by a family from the 1800s. It has been disturbed. It has all the originally stuff inside it, and on of the bedrooms was kind of a mess, now their footprints on the ground that led to the end of the cabin and they continue to go straight," said the teacher.
Haskel and Martha looked at each other, they wanted to scream Jesse's name but they did not. They knew who it was, but they did not want Jesse to know about it.
"Nobody has any information about this," asked the teacher.
All the kids shook there heads no.
"Alright class, that is all," said the teacher.
So they went back to doing their work until the lunch bell rang. When Jesse got up, Haskel looked at his shoes and they were clean on top, but the bottoms still had dry dirt on the sides of his shoes.
"So what are we going to do?" whispered Martha.
"We need to tell the principal, we will watch Jesse and his friends go to the cafeteria, then once we don't see them we will go see the principal," said Haskel.
So they got up and walked out of the classroom, they waited for Jesse and his buddies to go into the cafeteria. Then Peter walks out of class.
"Hey why were standing there?" asked Peter.
"We were waiting for Jesse to go in the cafeteria," said Haskel.
"What for?" asked Peter.
"Because he is the one that broke into the cabin," said Haskel.
"What," said Peter.
"Yeah, Sunday we were riding our bikes through town, and we saw Jesse and his buddies walking, they had mud on their shoes, today it looked like Jesse tried to clean his shoes but missed the sides of his shoes, were going to tell the principal, hopefully, he does not find out," said Haskel.
"If you knew, it does not matter if he knows, you need to tell, come on let's go," said Peter walking away.
"Come on sister," said Haskel.
They walked inside the principal's office.
"We need to make this short before he gets suspicious about where we are," said Martha.
"What is it," said the principal.
"My sister and I know who broke on Walkers property and we know the person that knows where Walker lives," said Haskel.
"Alright, give me a name," said the principal.
"It was Jesse, he was the one that followed Peter home one day, he stayed on the bus to see where Peter lived, that's how he knows where Walker lives. And Sunday afternoon we were riding our bikes into town and we saw Jesse and his buddies walking, they had mud on their shoes, today it looked like Jesse tried to clean his shoes but he missed the sides of his shoes," said Haskel.
"Thank you, this is good information," said the principal.
"May we go now," said Martha.
"Yes," said the principal.
So they quickly walked into the cafeteria and went through the line and got some food and sat down, luckily Jesse and his buddies were still in line also. So they walked to there table and sat down and started eating.
"I'm glad he was still in line by the time we got there," said Martha.
"Me too," said Haskel.
"What's wrong with you guys, you sound like your afraid of him or something," said Peter.
"And your not," said Martha.
"Well no, I used to be, but now that we are seniors and getting older, I am not afraid of him anymore," said Peter.
"That's good," said Haskel.
"You shouldn't either," said Peter.
"I know, it's just his father is an alcoholic and he beats him, so every time he gets it, he comes to school angry, and he wants to take it out on people, beat them up because he gets beat," said Haskel.
"Oh really, maybe I can help him if he would be still and talk to me and listen," said Peter.
"Really," said Haskel.
"He will be an adult next year, and he can make his own decisions, he can move out and live somewhere else once he as a job and stuff," said Peter.
"Well It ain't that easy on the reservation to find a steady job or a good home," said Haskel.
Then a light went off in Peter's head. So they continued their lunch.
"All who are put of the hand drum singers, you have practice today and also for you seniors that are graduating soon and are part of the hand drum singers you will have practice as well," said the principal.
Peter was excited. The bell rang again, when he went to the bus stop he saw Walker and Eagle Bear.
"Hey Dad, what are you doing here?" asked Peter.
"I'm going to talk to the principal, he called me today, and we brought you your hand drum you have practice today," said Walker.
"That's right," smiled Peter.
"Well you better get going, you don't want to be late," said Eagle Bear.
"Come on guys lets go," said Peter to Martha and Haskel.
Jesse had his arms crossed and smiling and watching Peter walk to the gym.
"Let's go," smiled Jesse.
So they started walking to try to jump Peter, but by the time they passed Walker's truck, he looked down and noticed their shoes.
"Hey huh, boys, come over here please," said Walker.
"Why," said Jesse.
"Come on, let's go talk inside," said Walker.
Eagle Bear was standing behind Jesse and his buddies so they would not follow Peter. So Walker and Eagle Bear walked them up to the school and took them to the principal. The principal saw Jesse and his buddies.
"Sit down here," said Walker.
"Principal," said Walker.
"Walker, I was going to tell you that a couple of witnesses saw Jesse and his buddies break the lock on the cabin," said the principal.
"I know, I saw their shoes a minute ago, so I have them sitting out on the benches outside your office," Walker.
"Alright let's go talk, I already called reservation police to come down as well," said the principal.
"Good a night in jail will probably do them good," said Walker.
"Maybe, Jesse's father is an alcoholic and he has been in and out of jail his whole life, he beats him too," said Eagle Bear.
"You know Jesse's father uncle," said Walker.
"Yes, he's one of those that got off the red road and has never found his way back since," said Eagle Bear.
Just then the reservation police walked in.
"Oh man we are going to jail," said one of the guys.
"Relax, jail ain't nothing," said Jesse.
"Kids," said the police officer.
"Officer," scoffed Jesse.
"Don't play with me Jesse, you guys know better, so I am going to transport you and your friends downtown, to spend the night in jail. If Walker catches you on his property again, he has the right to put you in handcuffs and you will be thrown in prison with the big boys because you will be tried as adults," said the officer.
"Whatever," said Jesse.
"Come on boys, let's go," said the officer leading them out to the police cars.
So the officers took them to jail, to spend the night.
