"Everybody in your positions and let's practice a hand drum song for the pow wow," said an elder.
So everybody got in line and started playing. Everybody else sat down to listen and grabbed a snack from the tables set up.
"I do hope they catch Jesse," said Martha.
"They will Martha, that you don't need to worry about," said Haskel.
So they continued to watch Peter and the other boys sing. Then walks in Eagle Bear and Walker, they both saw Martha and Haskel and sat next to them.
"Walker, did you catch, you know who," asked Martha?
"Yes we did, they are going to spend the night in jail and think about what they did," said Walker.
"Did they suspect us," said Marhta.
"No they didn't, I don't think they know who told us,' said Walker.
"Good I want to keep it that way," said Haskel.
So they continued to watch Peter on stage with the boys. When they were finished singing, Peter came off stage and walked towards where Walker was standing.
"Hey guys," smiled Peter.
"I have some great news for you," said Haskel.
"What?" asked Peter.
"Your dad caught Jesse and his buddies and they are going to spend the night in jail," said Haskel.
"You caught them," said Peter.
"Yes we did," said Walker.
"Well that's good, maybe they can learn something from this," said Peter.
"Maybe," said Haskel.
"You guys okay to go home in the dark, I can put your bikes in the back and take you home," said Walker.
"It is getting dark that would be great," said Martha.
"Alright let's go then," said Walker.
So they left the center and jumped into the back of Walker's truck and he drove them home.
"Thanks for the ride Walker," said Haskel getting the bikes out.
"Your welcome anytime sonny," said Walker.
"See you Friday at school," said Peter.
"See you Friday," said Haskel going inside the house.
Walker drove off back to the ranch. When they arrived home Karen had dinner ready for them on the table so they walked in and washed their hands and sat at the table and began eating. When they had finished, they all cleaned up and went to bed.
The next morning they woke up and ate breakfast and Walker dropped Peter off at the bus stop and went to work.
"I wonder if Jesse will be here?" asked Haskel.
"I don't know we will see," said Martha.
So they got on the bus and noticed that Jesse and his buddies were not on the bus.
"Maybe he didn't come today," said Martha.
"Maybe he didn't get on the bus," said Haskel.
"Yeah he wasn't at the bus stop either, but his friends are here look, they're standing near the lockers.
"I know that is weird, maybe something happened to him at home," said Haskel.
"We shall see," said Peter.
So they arrived at school and went to class they noticed Jesse's seat was empty so Peter raised his hand in class.
"What happened to Jesse he was not at the bus stop or on the bus and his seat is empty," said Peter.
"He had another accident at home and he won't be in school for a while now," said the teacher.
"His father," whispered Peter to Martha and Haskel.
"Ms. may I be excused from class," said Peter.
"I don't know," said the teacher.
"Please, its Jesse, I want to help him," said Peter.
"Alright," said the teacher in amazement.
Peter got up and ran out of the classroom. Haskel and Martha grabbed their bags and ran out of the classroom after Peter.
"Peter wait, what are you doing," said Haskel.
"Helping a friend," said Peter.
"Don't you remember that kid wanted to hurt you," said Haskel.
"I know, but he's in trouble and he needs our help, we can go visit him and make sure he is okay," said Peter.
"What if his father is there, drunk," said Martha.
"We will call the police," said Peter.
So they walked to Jesse's home and heard yelling and things shattering inside.
"I'm calling the police," said Martha.
So the started dialing 911. Then pretty soon they showed up and surrounded the house. They called the ambulance and they came also.
The Police rushed in and handcuffed Jesse's father and took him to the police car, and then put Jesse on the stretcher and wheeled him into the ambulance.
"Jesse," Peter, shouted running up to the ambulance.
"Jesse it's us, we're here now," said Martha.
His eyes were closed.
Hey, come on I'll give you a lift," said a police officer.
So they all got in the car and the police officer drove them to the hospital. When they arrived they went to Jesse's room and sat with him.
"Some friends he has, they didn't even come with us," said Martha.
"then they are not his friends,' said Peter.
"Are you family?" asked the doctor.
"No, we're just friends, his only father is in jail for doing this to him," said Martha.
"Oh I can show you this," said the doctor.
"Hold on, let me get a pen and paper out of my bag," said Martha.
So he showed them his x-rays.
"This kid is a walking pencil. Each bone in his body is broken or cracked, but these are old and they are already healing nicely, but on top of some of them are fresh brakes and cracks," said the doctor.
"My goodness, poor Jesse, I had no idea," said Martha.
"He hid the pain very well," said Peter.
"I know, that is crazy," said Haskel.
"Is he going to have to have surgery?" asked Martha.
"Only on his shoulder, that is a fresh break, but everything else is already healing nicely," said the doctor.
"Thank you, doctor," said Martha.
The doctor walked out. Jesse started moving, Peter, Haskel, and Martha went towards the bed.
"Jesse, it's okay, it's us," said Martha.
"Jesse," said Peter.
Jesse slowly opened his eyes and started looking around.
"Hi Jesse, we've been here since you arrived," said Martha.
"Why," said Jesse.
"We noticed you weren't at school today so we left class to check on you, then we followed the ambulance up here to the hospital," said Martha.
"Well thank you," said Jesse.
Their eyes were wide and shocked at his answer.
"Your welcome, we all know what you are going through," said Haskel.
"You're not alone,' said Jesse.
"My friends didn't come," asked Jesse?
"They're not your friends Jesse if they were they would have done what we did," said Peter.
"This is true, Peter I'm sorry for being a jerk to you guys, I guess I was taking my anger and hatred on the wrong people and I am sorry, I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me," said Jesse.
"I forgive you," smiled Peter.
"Truce," said Jesse.
"Truce," said Peter.
"They said you will be fine, but you will have to have surgery on your shoulder," said Martha.
"I am," asked Jesse?
"Yes don't worry though, you are going to be okay," said Haskel.
"Are you ready, we will get you all set up," said the nurse.
So the nurse and two other people started to wheel him out for surgery.
"We will still be here waiting," yelled Martha.
So they sat down in his room and waited.
"Excuse me, what room is Jesse in," said Walker.
"307," said the front desk.
"Thank you," said Walker.
"Sweetheart," said Karen.
"Mom," said Peter.
"Are you alright, we were worried when you didn't come home today," said Karen.
"Yes I am fine mom, I had just had a gut feeling about Jesse, so I ran out of school to his house," said Peter.
"We had to call the police, we heard shouting and glass breaking, then they pulled Jesse out on a stretcher and took him here, so we sat with him, and now he is going to get the surgery done on his shoulder. They said he was a walking pencil, every bone in his body was old cracks and old broken bones that were already healing and a fresh brake was on his shoulder," said Martha handing Karen the paper she wrote on.
"I heard what happened, the police officer's called me while I was at work," said Walker.
"Dad, can I stay here until they roll him back in," said Peter.
"Yes, we all will wait," said Walker.
"What is going to happen to him now, he has no mom, she died by his father, and now his father is in jail for a long time," said Martha.
"He will be fine, he is going to stay with his grandparents, they live in a two-story home off the reservation," said Walker.
"Oh good, he can get away from this place," said Haskel.
"Yes start over," said Peter.
"This is true," said Martha.
An hour later they wheeled Jesse back into his room.
"Hey doc," said Walker.
"He is going to be just fine," said the doctor.
"Thank you, doctor," said Haskel.
"Jesse, I know you are asleep, but we will be back tomorrow to visit you," said Peter.
"Come on, let's let him rest," said Karen.
They walked out of the hospital and Walker took Martha and Haskel home and then they drove home as well.
