Chapter 5

Next morning everybody was up early, even the kids, they were excited about this new adventure, but Luther Standing Bear and Black Elk knew this was dangerous, especially if the witch doctor knows everything. So they saddled up their horses, and they each had a horse. They rode off to find Victoria.

They rode through many flat lands and canyons, they came to another canyon and rested.

"Its kind of creepy in this canyon momma," said Madison.

"I know darling, but don't worry your grandpa and uncle are watching," said Gloria.

They built a fire and ate some jerky.

"Dad, if the witch doctor has her, do you think she's alive?" asked Black Elk.

"Yes, she is alive, and I'm sure the other women are alive as well," said Luther Standing Bear.

Black Elk was looking down into the canyon, staring at the fire from a far distance.

"Son are you alright?" asked Luther Standing Bear.

"No, I'm afraid of that witch doctor, he knows how to get into your dreams, and make you have nightmares," said Black Elk.

"I know son, but don't let him scare you, your braver than that, but don't let that scare you, he's strong yes, he has been stabbed multiple times and survived every one of them and he's still alive, but he can be killed, so don't let him scare you my son," said Luther Standing Bear.

Black Elk just nodded and looked down into the fire again.

"You go to sleep son, and I'll stay up and watch, then the next day it will be your turn to watch," said Luther Standing Bear.

"Okay, I'll see you in the morning," said Black Elk.

"I'll see you in the morning son, goodnight," said Luther Standing Bear.

"Night," said Black Elk.

So Black Elk walked down onto the canyon floor, rolled his bedding out and laid down. Gloria smiled and closed her eyes and went to sleep, as did the kids. Luther Standing Bear was still up watching from the top of the canyon, he looked in the distance, he could see for miles, he looked and saw an orange glare. Then he herd wolves howling at night, but he kept looking at the orange glare, it was fire.

"Were getting close Victoria," said Luther Standing Bear staring at the orange glare.

Next morning Luther went down to the canyon floor, he put the fire out and woke Gloria up, she then woke her kids up, Black Elk was already up scouting the canyon floor already. He came back with a piece of linen fabric.

"Father, look what I found deep in the canyon," said Black Elk.

"It looks like fabric from someone's clothes," said Luther Standing Bear.

Gloria walks up to Black Elk.

"That's a ribbon, Victoria was wearing a ribbon in her hair, maybe she's leaving us a bread crumb, letting us know that she is alive," hoped Gloria.

"That's good news, I also found tracks, horse tracks, and deep foot impressions in the dirt. Somebody is dragging their leg, and I found small drops of blood," said Black Elk.

"Somebody is hurt, maybe a gunshot wound, we are very close, last night I saw an orange glare off in that direction, I believe its them, were very close," said Luther Standing Bear.

"That's good news, I hope they did not hurt her," said Gloria.

"Me either, lets pack up and keep riding, since were getting close, we need to be very careful and cautious, keep an eye out as well, because I am sure his men are out looking for signs of more people," said Luther Standing Bear.

So they packed all their belongings on the horses, rode further into the canyon until they started to come out of the canyon, and they kept riding forward. They rode over hills and valleys, and they came upon sand hill mountain, they stopped and rested outside of the mountain, they also found an old adobe brick home with the roof gone and three windows they rested inside the adobe brick home. It was Black Elks turn to keep watch, so he stood out of the brick home and watched.

Black Elk was standing there, he could hear echo's in the mountain, he herd shouting and screaming, and saw the orange glare that his father saw back in the canyons. He was getting anxious, so he started to walk towards the mountain, then Luther Standing Bear came out.

"Son, don't, wait, be patient my son, we'll get Victoria," said Luther Standing Bear.

Black Elk looked back at the mountains and walked back towards the brick home and stood and watched. Luther Standing Bear went back inside and laid down and went to sleep as did Gloria and the kids.
