Chapter 6

Emma's POV:

I don't know how this is real. I keep going over everything. Again. And. Again. It still does not make any sense. How is Mila, my soulmate? Adeline was supposed to be the only one. I flashed back to talking to my brother, telling him what his wife had seen. What Mila is supposed to be to me. And how he couldn't charge or ask for insurance because someone was after her and her mom. I couldn't get it from her thoughts who it was precisely, but I swear when I figure out who it is. I'm going to kill them. How dare they hurt what's mine. Okay, I really got to stop doing that for now. I just became possessive. I want to protect her, and I don't want anything to ever happen to her. I know what people are feeling and thinking, and I can control their emotions, but I've never been able to fully feel their emotions as if I was personally feeling it, but when it came to Mila, it was as if I was feeling it for her.

Wow, this place is gorgeous. I got out, immediately walking to Mila's door and opening it for her. I helped her out. She was hesitant at first to put her hand in mine, but she did anyway. I immediately felt the sparks and the warmth radiate throughout me. I could feel my heart start to beat a couple of times. I know she felt it, too, because once she was on her feet, she pulled her hand from me. Chloe and I walk her to the door. All of a sudden, an older woman rushed out the door.

"MIJA! I told you to keep me updated!" You could hear the strong Spanish accent in her words.

"Sorry, Mami... I was busy." She's so cute when she grumbles.

"I was so worried." Then the older lady looked up at Chloe and me studying us. I saw Mila in her; only Mila was just a younger version of her mixed with who would I assume is her father. I saw the dark circles under their eyes. I could feel that her mom was terrified for her daughter's life. She had a lot of worry lines around her eyes. It wasn't smiling lines, more like frown lines. I knew then that the man I was going to kill one day would be my father-in-law. I snapped out of my thought process. I really need to get ahold of my control.

"Who are these lovely ladies." I could feel the anxiety rise within Mila as she tensed. I quickly spoke for her.

"We are Mila's friends. I'm Emma, and this is Chloe. We helped get her to the doctors." The older lady looked as though she was processing all the information. She visibly relaxed, and I felt her anxiety and fear start to go down.

"Thank you for helping my daughter. I'm thankful she has already made great friends like you two." She truly was happy and relieved she had people. Why was she so worried about her not having that, and now relieved.

"Here come in. I've made dinner. You two look so hungry."

"Mami.." I felt the embarrassment rise in Mila. I instantly found myself trying to calm her. I could feel my ability start to calm her down. Before I could say anything, Chloe immediately spoke out.

"YES! Please, I am so hungry we weren't able to have lunch!" All of a sudden, she looked at me like, oh shit. I waved her off; I would be fine. I'll sneak a quick swig from my blood bottle before going inside.

"Yeah, same here. Let me just go grab my phone from my car and let my brother know where I am." I hurried to my car and grabbed my blood bottle. I took big gulps; I couldn't get the blood down fast enough. Once I downed the entire bottle, I texted my brother, telling him where I was.

I really don't know what has come over me. I would have never agreed to this, but with Mila... I can't leave her alone. It's like I have to be by her side, or I can't take it. I feel incomplete. That's it. I need to push these feelings down deeper. I got out of my car and hurried back to where everyone was.

"Alright, everything is good on my end." I looked at Chloe.

"Same here." She agreed with me.

"Alright, Chloe and Emma. Come on inside." Luckily I didn't need to be invited. Those who keep their soul intact didn't need to be invited in.

Walking into the house, I noticed how beautiful it was. We made our way to a vast dining room with a massive table centered in the middle of the room. We all took our seats and didn't have to wait long for the food to be served. It wasn't too bad, either.

Human food didn't really taste like much to me anymore, but luckily for me, they have hot sauce. Hot sauce is the only thing vampires can taste, and it tastes delicious. Another fun fact is that drinking hot liquids and hot food can also warm a vampire's body temperature, but not for very long. The only way for it to truly sustain warmth is by meeting their mate and their heart beating again. Hot liquids only kept our body warm for a few minutes at most. Food kept our body temperature warm for just a little bit longer than liquids, though. Soon we were all finished eating and engaging in light conversations.

"Thank you so much, Mrs. Valdez. This was such an amazing meal. I've got to head out now. My parents are waiting outside." Chloe said as she looked at me. She asked if I was okay in her head. I nodded.

"I'll see you tomorrow Chloe. Be safe getting home." I felt the awkward silence fall upon us. That was my cue.

"I'll go ahead and head out as well." I felt sadness fall over me heavily. It wasn't just me who was saddened by this fact... Mila was feeling it too. She looked down; I noticed at this moment how fragile she looked and how beautiful she was. She finally looked up, and our eyes locked onto one another's. That's when it hit me like a ton of bricks; I was feeling all of her anxiety, fear, and torment. It broke my heart to know she was feeling this way. I felt helpless because I didn't know what to do to help her or if I even could. I heard her sigh ever so softly.

"I'll walk you to the front door, Emma." She then turned to her mom and kissed her cheek. "I'll be right back to help with clean up Mami." My beautiful girl is so sweet. Again with the "my," stop it, Emma!

"No, Mija. Go rest afterward." She then looked at me. "Thank you again, Emma." I just waved her off.

" It's no problem, Mrs. Valdez." It really wasn't a big deal to me. I would do anything for Mila.

"Just call me Anita." I smiled and nodded at her.

"Of course. Have a goodnight, Anita. Thank you again for the amazing meal." Already letting me call her by her first name. Already won my mother-in-law's heart, I can feel how much more she trusts me. OMG... STOP IT. I was in a constant battle with my thoughts right now. We stopped at the door. Mila finally looked up at me and broke the silence.

"Thank you, Emma. It means a lot." I could feel the sadness start to encase her heart. I immediately lifted her gaze back up to mine.

"Hey, it's no problem. I'm always here. I'm always going to keep you safe." I felt her feel a bit better, along with a strong surge of attraction. She started to blush, and I just smiled. Being this close to her, I finally realized how much taller I was than her. I lifted her chin back up so her eyes would meet mine.

"Goodnight, Mila. I have already put my number in your phone. If you need me, call me." I gently pressed my lips to her forehead and walked out the door. I don't understand why she has a shocked expression on her face and why her heart started beating erratically out of nowhere. Then I finally realized what elicited that reaction out of her... I fucking kissed her forehead. Holy shit, what am I doing? It's like I'm not in control anymore. I need to get out of here. I know... I know all the signs are there, but I still can't let go of Adeline. I still feel like I'm betraying her.
