I looked at the small army I had amassed. Several dozen shadowling skeletons and a dozen or so shadowling zombies. I had already used bone enhancement as well. It was indeed painful, and it was also taxing on the mind. It took a while to do, as I didn't have much Qi to work with, but I managed to add the spikes of a shadowling to the back of my skeletal hands. I hadn't found any suitable bones to use so I could mimic a spiked gauntlet. Nothing seemed to be quite long enough.
Regardless, I would keep looking for now.
I looked across the barren, blackened land. The ground was covered in a mucus like layer of something. Shadow, I believe it was called. In the distance there was a faint outline of... a hill?
'No, that should be a shadowling nest.' I thought, staring at it.
After staring at it for a few minutes, I made up my mind and began to approach. A fog had appeared at some point. The closer to the nest I got, the denser it was.
I could hear something not quite clicking or growling, but somewhere in between the two echoing around me.
I paused.
'Skeletons and zombies don't sound like that. Neither do Shadowlings.' I thought.
Something crashed into me.
A burning sensation spread across my waist. I looked down find an eight-legged creature attached to me, practically drooling acid on me as its mandibles clamped down on me. It had a purplish carapace wrapped around its body with darker spikes rising on its back. A short tail, about nine inches long that was completely covered with spikes was hanging down.
It took a moment to pry the creature off of me, atfer which I tossed it to the ground and began to deliver a series of kicks to it.
It was far too close for me to use magic without putting myself in danger of being mauled.
I could hear the clacking of skeletons and the growls of zombies.
A spike flew past my face as two more of the creatures appeared in the fog, running towards me.
Several more spikes were sent my way as I kicked the first creature away from me and pulled back.
I brought my hands together as an orb formed between them and spoke, "Dark Barrier."
A small dome of energy with a black tint formed around me. It was about a dozen feet in diameter and rose around nine feet into the air.
"Dark Arrow." My voice rang out. A single blackened arrow made of mana flew out and struck the first creature in what I can only guess was its face. It was rather hideous and quite possibly deformed.
That thought was quickly discarded as I turned my attention towards the other two approaching creatures and found that they looked identical.
A volley of spikes sailed through the air towards me, striking my Dark Barrier. A second volley struck as I cast another Dark Arrow.
With a wave of my hand a second Dark Arrow struck the closer creature as they reached my Dark Barrier.
