I stepped through the portal along with several others.
The shriek of a creature sounded out as something large flew past overhead. I paused as I took in its form.
'Aren't Griffins extinct? I thought the last one was hunted down a little over 600 years ago.' I thought as the whistling of an arrow could be heard before the Griffin was struck.
My eyes traced the trajectory to a nearby wooden fort. It had been erected on a hill. The walls snaked around the bends and curves of the hill to encompass the entire fort with watchtowers every 200 meters or so. There was a ballista mounted on one of the walls and it was in the process of priming for another shot. A pair of skeletons swiftly loaded the ballista and aimed at the Griffin as a horn sounded. The bolt tore through one of the Griffon's wings causing it to plummet to the ground.
'Why is there a fort guarded by skeletons in broad daylight here? And it's made of wood too!' I thought as I began to observe the fort in detail. Large stones, boulders most likely, dotted the landscape no matter where one looked. There was rusted armor and weapons as well as two deep craters and a handful of revealed pitfalls that hadn't been covered over yet.
A draugr had climbed up the wall and jumped down followed by a few more moments later. Despite wearing what looked like Grey-Steel armor, they were quite fast. Very quickly seven of them had surrounded the Griffin and swung their weapons at it, while another three of them used crossbows to shoot at it from some distance away. The Griffon's screeching was loud, had anyone else been in place of the draugr, they would have lost their hearing temporarily, if not permanently.
As the griffon collapsed from the assault of the draugrs the strange bell rung once as the stone next to the portal lit up.
[Floor failed. Beginning reset. Return to the underground floor immediately.]
The barrier surrounding the portal disappeared. Not really having any other choice, we all filed back through the portal.
I stepped through to find the people in a clamor. Leon had a sour expression as he spoke with Asseylum.
I walked over to the pair.
"I don't understand how we failed. We didn't even do anything." Asseylum said.
"Your guess is as good as mine. I have a few ideas but... I'm not sure." Leon said.
I glanced at them both before saying, "The Griffon."
"What about it?" Leon asked with a raised eyebrow.
"The bell only rang after it died." I said.
