Leon

Zarchary's idea sounded crazy, but it wasn't without merit. Even so, it was better than nothing.

A small group of us went through the portal after a few hours had passed. The same landscape as before greeted us. A hill with a wooden fort manned by skeletons. The large rocks scattered about the surroundings, and the Griffon overhead.

I could faintly make out the ballista on the wall. Off to the side I saw that Zachary had already nocked three arrows on his bow. Everything hinged on what happened next. Of the twenty people that had come through the portal with us, seven, including Zachary, had a bow. Asseylum had her gauntlets, and there were two magic swordsmen, one with a greatsword and the other a rapier. Everybody else had some combination of sword and shield, myself included. Needless to say, the people who didn't come through with us weren't happy about letting us use their equipment.

Zachary mumbled something I didn't catch before letting his trio of arrows fly.

I held my breath as I watched the arrows sail through the sky. By some miracle they collided with the ballista bolt, causing it to shift just enough to miss the Griffon.

The Griffon twisted in the air as it dodged the next bolt. It circled around the fort once before dark clouds began to gather.

'Is that... Summon Storm?!' I thought as I paled in fright. Summon Storm was an immensely powerful spell. Its only drawback was its mana consumption, and casting it without being interrupted. That being said though, its capabilities were only limited by the caster. In history the number of times a spell of this magnitude had been used, even this specifically, didn't number more than a few hundred. A spell like this was generally used to demolish cities.

The clouds rumbled as little bolts of lightning could be seen dancing through them.

As pillars of lightning began to rain down on the fort, a massive dome materialized around it, stopping them.

'How could a wooden fort have such a strong barrier? It doesn't make sense!' I thought as I stared in shock.

A rain of arrows flew from the fort as well as a volley of spells.

The fight would have dragged on for much longer had there not been an unexpected intervention.

A second Griffon flew into the fray after some time had gone by. When the barrier collapsed, the wooden fort was bombarded by the initial storm and the blizzard from the second Griffon.

The pair of Griffons landed in what was left of the fort and took to the skies a few minutes later with something in the claws of one of them.

The strange bell rang thrice as the stone lit up.

The barrier around the portal disappeared and as people recovered from their stupor they left, one by one.
