chapter 5

TWO MONTHS LATER

   Neil  came into the room to see magpie,but instead of magpie running to her as usual, she just sat there looking at her as if wondering where she came from.

    Magpie, Neil called out 

won't you come hug mummy, magpie continued staring at her.

       You won't pretend you don't know mummy now would you? Neil said trying to touch her but Maggie shrieked and ran into Fariya's arms.

    What's wrong Fariya, don't she recognise me anymore? Neil asked bewildered

    I don't know ma, but I will try talking to her.

   Please do, but for the main time, I will go out now, when I come back make sure she is okay, Neil said looking at Maggie as if she just came from another planet.

   Why did you behave that way to your mother, you know you should be nice to her. She brought you to this world and for that you should be thankful to her, Fariya said to Maggie while wondering what made maggie behave that way to to Neil.

    The only reply Fariya got was a stare from Maggie.

   Fine then, don't tell me why you behaved that way but please when she comes back later be kind to her

  Fariya!! Fariya!! Fariya!! Where are you, Neil called out while taking her bag downstairs.

    I am here ma, Fariya said while coming down the stairs too.

   I am travelling to the US for a week , take care of magpie and also take care of the house too.

  Yes ma, safe journey ma, Fariya said as she made her farewell.

    Maggie!! Fariya called out

Mummy, Maggie called back.

   Maggie, mummy is not at home but she would soon be back, Fariya explained slowly.

Mummy, Maggie said again.

   Maggie I already told you mummy isn't here , do you have to keep making me feel bad, you've repeated mummy ten times from yesterday morning till today's afternoon q

. I had always explained that she travelled and she would soon come back.

  Maggie was just staring at Fariya through out her speech, when Fariya was through with talking, Maggie bursted into  taers.

  The tears was uncontrollable and it lasted for 20 minutes .

After crying, Maggie fell asleep and Fariya started feeling guilty for talking to her a bit harshly.

A plane crashed in the sky after the foggy morning weather, there are 7 dead, 16 injured and 20 escaped with minor injuries .

  Fariya was sad after watching the news. As she was about to stand up, the names of the people who were involved in the accident was called .

The minor injured are Jeremiah Moses, Joan John ...........

The severely injured are Faith john, Elly kella ............ And the seven dead are Riyama Ruya, Fakaya Faki, Mercy Sokya, Kaycee, Joshua jobisha, muiaya muki and Neil Lucas.

At the pronounciation of Neil's name, Fariya nearly fainted. She couldn't believe that Neil would die just like that

    Immediately, she thought of Maggie who was sitting close to her. How would her life be now? No mother, No father. Who would take care of her now, Fariya thought, getting more questions than answers. Then she thought of Neil's friends they would agree to help her.

       After all, Maggie is their late friend's daughter. They would send her to school, feed her, clothe and give her shelter.

 .    It's nice , she would still have a life, Fariya thought feeling relieved that Maggie would be safe after all.

     Two days after receiving the news of Neil's death, her friends Lucille, keelin, Natalie came to the house.

      After entertaining them, Fariya was asked to sit.

      I am sure you are aware that Neil is dead and that Maggie is without a mother Lucille said, and the three of us have decided to keep Maggie in our custody, so when she's older, she would help us fetch some money.

     What do you mean by help you fetch fetch some money, Fariya asked smelling a rat.

 .    Are you stupid or do you think we would just take care of a motherless child for free? Do we look like charity workers? Natalie sparked already fed up with talking kindly

       So you mean Maggie would start prostitution when she's older? Fariya asked not believing her ears.

     Do we look like prostitute like prostitutes? Keelin asked already pissed off.

         Nawa oooo girls, una see us see trouble, this stupid nanny dey call us prostitute, when she turned back to Fariya, she was already yelling, who said Maggie is going to be a prostitute, she is just going to go to bed with one of those rich guys and fetch home money to use. How does that resemble being a prostitute?she asked looking at Fariya with contempt.

       Fariya looked at keelin, then at Lucille before turning to Natalie, then she turned back to keelin Wondering if they are all mad, how would they say prostitution us different from going to bed with a man and getting paid ?oooo, i see now Fariya thought. So they think prostitutes are  those that stand by the road side, while those who arrange and sleep with the men under a roof are called what, a harlot? Hooker? Or sex worker? Fariya nearly giggled . When she realized the level of their stupidity.

       If you like continue staring at me like a fool that you are , I give you one week to pack your things, because on Monday, we are going to pack in here to live with Maggie.

         It was then that the real reason why they want to adopt Maggie downed on her . The property was willed to Maggie , without Maggie no property and without property, they won't be rich. Fariya knew she wouldn't let Maggie's life be made useless, so she hatched a plan.

     After Natalie, keelin and Lucille left, Fariya went to look for a house then she started to look for a house, then she started to pack she and Maggie's things and then transferred it to the house .

       Before Monday, she already packed her things and other valuebles in the house, so that's could sell it and be able to sustain herself and Maggie before getting a new job.

Fariya thought of a state to go to that it would be difficult for them to trace her so she decided to go to kano since it was far from Lagos.

        After staying in a cramped room for one week, Fariya hired s car to take then and their properties to kano.
