Remy could have sworn his mind left his body as the ambulance arrived and Renee was lifted onto a gurney. He was unable to move, unable to think, unable to do anything but watch in horror as one of his best friends was driven away in the ambulance. He couldn't respond when Landon told him he was going to ride to the hospital with her; he just stood there, mechanically nodding his head as if to say he understood. A bunch of students who heard the commotion came out to ask what was happening, but Remy could only look at the ambulance and hope to god that Renee wasn't about to die.
When it was finally out of view, he just stood there, staring at the last place he could see it before it disappeared behind a building. When his mind finally registered how cold it was, he numbly walked back inside. The first thing he did was call Emmitt.
"Hey, Remy! I'm actually on my way back now! I'll be there in, like, five minutes. Did you need anything?"
"Renee..." he croaked, voice rough. "She's... she's at the hospital."
"What? Is she okay? What happened?"
Remy just shook his head as if he could see him, letting out a sob.
"Okay, Rem. Just hold on. I'm almost there. Or are you at the hospital?"
"No."
"It'll be okay, Remy."
"You don't know that," he said, then hung up, sliding to the floor next to the doors leading outside.
