The Bet

I woke up to suffocation the next day. There was this huge weight on my chest and hair in my mouth.

There could only be one answer.

OH MY GOD! ITS A BEAR! IM GONNA DIE!

I couldn't see anything with the fur in my face. There was heavy snoring.

Bears snore?

What am I going to do? What do you do when a bear falls asleep on top of you?

I'm losing the blood circulation in my arms. SHIT!

Ok, ok breathe. There's only one thing I can think of doing. Maybe the bear will be too shocked to realize I'm running away.

I maneuvered my knee under the bear, so that I can use my force. And with all my effort, I jab my knee up hard with as much force as I can.

"AHHHHHHH," I heard it yelp from on top of me. The weight lifted off of me and I could breathe again. With the hair out of my face, I could see better.

The thing on top of me wasn't a bear at all.

It was human.

It was man.

It was Chester.

Chester was crouched over groaning in pain, holding onto his area where the sun doesn't shine.

And that's when I realized what I had done. My hands flew up to my mouth and my eyes bulged.

"Oh my god, Chester. I'm so sorry," I tell him, going over towards him. He just grunted to me in response.

"What were you trying to do?!?? Disable me," he asked in disbelief.

"I thought you were a bear, suffocating me! I had to think of something to get you off of me."

"How could you think I was a bear?!?! You just go around kneeing bears in the balls?!?!" He was now looking up at me from the floor.

"I just woke up! I was still a little delusional from the suffocation."

Chester finally got off the floor slowly.

"I'll forgive you after I beat you on the field," he says with a smirk on his face. I burst out laughing.

"YOU really think that YOU can beat ME! That's the best joke I've ever heard!"

"Alright, fine. Let's make a bet." He had a wild look in his eyes. He found excitement in the thought of a challenge.

"No. I'm not falling into that trap."

"What? Are you scared? I thought you were certain you were going to win." That earned him a glare from me.

"You know what? Fine. Maybe kicking your ass in flag football will bring your cockiness down a notch."

"Since your so confident, if you lose you have to do something for me. If I lose, which I won't, I'll owe you one."

"That seems fair enough. We could always skip the whole thing and go straight to me claiming my prize," I tell him.

"Just get ready and put your money where your mouth is," Chester says, glaring at me. I grab my bag and head to the bathroom.

Everyone was up, getting ready for the big day. The cheerleaders were going to wear their outfits and pick sides to cheer for. Whoever wanted to participate in the game could play. It didn't matter if you had skills or not.

I did my morning routine and chose an outfit to put on. It was some dark green shorts, a black shirt that spelled out number 1 in white lettering, black sneakers, and an army looking hat.

After I was done getting ready, I saw Alexandra in one of the open tents, fixing up a camera to take pictures with.

"Hey Alex," I say, going into the tent.

"Wassup!"

"Sooooooo, when did this thing with you and Daniel start," I ask her.

I never knew they were a thing. I never even thought they'd be together. Like I said, Daniel rubbed me off the wrong way, but I guess I was wrong.

They both grew up together and they're both seniors. Maybe they had a pretty great relationship and were going to be one of those high school sweethearts that survived college together and got married and had kids.

"Actually, we got together pretty recently. We kind of keep it private, so no one interferes. We're both also not that lovey dovey, so it works."

I could tell by her avoiding eye contact with me that she wasn't telling me everything, but I wasn't going to say anything.

If she wanted to talk about it, then I'm here to listen. If she wasn't ready to say anything, I wasn't going to force it out of her.

"I'm happy for you. I just never imagined you guys would be a couple. I guess you never really know."

She finally finished with fixing up her camera and we left her tent.

Everyone was heading over to the open field for the game. I saw Chester talking to Daniel about something. When they were done, Daniel patted Chester on the back and made his was in front of everyone.

"Okay everyone, we're going to get started. I have been informed about a bet that's going on, so for the sake of the bet, for the first game, Chester will be captain of the first group and Spencer will be captain of the second group."

I looked over at Chester and he was smirking at me.

He was really serious about his bets.

Daniel motioned both of us to come forward to pick teams.

"Flip the coin. Heads, Chester gets first pick and tails, Spencer gets first pick." Daniel made sure to show us it wasn't a trick coin and threw it into the air. He caught it in his palm and flipped it onto the back of his hand.

"Heads. Chester gets first pick." Chester looked happy, but I wasn't going to worry because I've been watching everyone on the team and I know everyone's skills.

Chester went ahead and picked Parker, knowing that he was really fast, but what he didn't know was that Jamie was also fast, so I picked Jamie. Chester then picked someone named Landon from the football team, so I picked Alexander.

The picking kept going until each team had enough players. Chester and I shook hands and went to our sides of the field. My team huddled together.

"Alright, guys. We have a great advantage. We have more girls on this team, so the slow minded men over there are going to doubt our abilities, but jokes on them. I picked this team specifically because I know everyone's strengths."

"On our side we have enough brawns and brains to get us this win. As long as we communicate with each other efficiently and we're on the same page, we'll win."

Everyone on my team seemed to agree and we split up into formation. Because Chester won the coin toss, he got to do the first play.

He was squat down with the ball in front of Parker.

"WE'RE BEATING SPENCER'S TEAM, HUT," he called out.

What?!?!

What type of play was that?!?!

He threw the ball back to Parker and Parker made a run for it. Parker tries throwing the ball to someone else on his team, but Jamie knocks down the ball.

Jamie made the hand movements of 'I've got my eyes on you' to Parker and I could tell he was scared.

When I finally got to do the play, I crouched down in front of Alexander with the ball and called out the play.

"WE'RE TOO HOT TOO HANDLE! YOU'VE GOT BLUE SANDALS! HUT!"

Everyone on the other team looked confused, which made them take longer to get into position. I just throw the ball to Alexander. We all make a run for it.

Alexander looks like he's about to throw me the ball, so I get ready to catch.

The ball comes my way, but I don't get to catch it because Chester tackles me to the ground.

"Chester, flag football isn't a contact sport!" He gets off of me and helps me up.

"Oops, I slipped," he says, but from the smirk on his face, I could tell he was lying. I gave him a glare.

So, it's like that, huh?

The game goes on with both teams making a couple of scores. When the play goes back to Chester, he calls out the play, throws the ball to one of his teammates, and tries to make a run for it.

I go to where he is and.... oops, I tripped. Taking Chester down with me.

"What the hell, Spencer," Chester calls out, holding his head.

My body was over his. A knee on each side of him.

"I guess I kind of tripped. My bad," I tell him, smirking.

I try to get up from on top of him, but before I can, he flips us over.

"You better watch it, Sparrow. It seems your getting too comfortable being in this position. People might start asking questions," he whispers to me, his face close to mines.

I catch him off guard by flipping us back over and pulling myself off of him.

"I think you should watch it, Chester. All that blushing isn't helping your bad boy rep." With that, I walk back over to my team.

The game goes on for the remaining minutes. The scores were so close. 21-23.

Guess who won.

My team obviously. Why would you ever doubt me?

Chester's team looked shocked. So did everyone else.

My team didn't care though. We were dancing and celebrating on the field.

Daniel announced the next two captains and everyone cleared the field.

I went to go sit on one of the benches to cool down. I sat out of the next game.

Chester came over to where I was and sat down next to me.

"So, since you won and proved me wrong, what will you have me do? I am at your service," he says, looking ashamed.

I looked over at him.

"I haven't really thought about it. I'll just save it for when I really need a favor."

"I just hope it's nothing like running in the halls naked" Chester says.

"Don't give me ideas," I tell him, laughing.

"Are you playing in another game?"

"No, I'm good. I'm just gonna go talk to Alexandra."

Alexandra was on the side lines taking pictures. I guess it was for the yearbook.

"Ok, I'll see you later," Chester says, leaving to join the next game.

I walk over to Alexandra, who's taking pictures of the current game.

"Can I take a look at the pictures you've taken of the trip so far," I ask her. She nods her head and goes to her gallery on the camera.

She goes through a couple of picture of people jumping off the cliff and of Parker getting wedgied by Jamie. Then she passes by a image of Chester blushing. She starts laughing.

"You know, I've never seen Chester blush this much in a long time," Alexandra informs me as she flips through images of me tackling Chester.

"Really?"

"Yeah. Chester's usually all moody and quite. Well, thats except for when Casey was around." Alexandra goes back to snapping pictures, not seeing the expression on my face.

"Who's Casey?"

"Casey was like Chester's first and only girlfriend, that I remember. It was sophomore year. I think her parents were in the military, so they moved a lot. She was a total badass. She was new to the school and I guess they ended up falling in love with each other or something. I'm not really sure what happened to her. She just left without explanation."

That's weird. How could someone just leave without explanation? No goodbyes. I can't imagine what Chester went through.

"Hey guys, we're gonna go start the bonfire!"
