Mike continuously sighed and became dispirited. He could see that there was no way out of this without him getting hurt.
"Is she really pregnant?" Millie asked once again.
She turned towards Kara and looked at her face with the hope that she would deny it. She desperately thought that whatever she heard just now was all hoax. And there is no truth in it.
"No! I mean I don't know... Maybe... Not impossible... But she is a good child, she never had any boyfriends until now... And I ..." Kara stuttered.
She really did not know if her daughter was pregnant or not. But the symptoms she showed in recent days indicated that she might be pregnant. There was also a possibility that it was just a false alarm and they were worrying for nothing.
Meanwhile, Mike escaped from that place while the elders were talking to each other. He ran outside the gate without looking behind.
"Just give me a definite answer, either she is pregnant or she is not!" Millie lost her cool and shouted at Kara.
"How can I tell if she is pregnant or not? I am just an ordinary nurse. It is just my assumption, as she started to have nausea in the mornings a few days ago. Also, her appetite had changed drastically from the past month. I also noticed that she had not used those yet for her monthly cycle. Maybe it is delayed.
And one more important thing I realized is that, without even informing me, she stopped drinking all of a sudden one fine day. I am not saying it is not good. We had been trying for a long time to make her stop drinking alcohol.
But it never worked before. This time we did not even ask her and she changed on her own. There are few other instances and her fainting now, all these… added up and I doubt...," Kara stopped speaking as she did not know what more to say.
She started with a high pitch but at the end of the sentence, her voice almost turned into whispers.
"So, you want a confirmation to see if she is really pregnant or not?" Millie finished her sentence and held the tree near her for support.
"Let's go inside and talk," Kara said and supported Millie inside the house.
Millie dropped her tired body on the nearby couch and stared at Dina. Kara sat on the floor next to Dina and held her hands tightly.
"What am I going to do now? How could this happen to my granddaughter?" Millie held her aching head and muttered.
She then once again looked at Dina, who was lying on the couch opposite her with a blank expression. Then slowly her expression turned something complicated and now she held her throbbing chest. How would she be able to control this free-spirited granddaughter, Dina?
Moreover, she needs to convert her into an obedient, and successful, Tina, who is also an exact mirror image of Grace! Her headache increased and she also felt dizzy.
"Please do not worry, it is just my assumption. I may be wrong. Still, it is better to be sure now than be sorry." Kara said in a low voice after she looked at Millie's pale face.
'Sorry? Sorry?' Millie could not even fight with her for how she raised her granddaughter.
Anyway, it was their fault to abandon the baby at the hospital in the first place. If only she had not agreed to her foolish daughter's decision to leave and stayed behind. Then she would have not seen such a horrible day today.
She knows thinking about the past would not change anything. Suddenly, she felt a chill down her spine. Will she really be able to convince Dina to agree to her conditions under these circumstances?
'If Dina is really pregnant and she already has a boyfriend then, why will she agree to take Tina's place? She would definitely not get married to the man Grace chose for Tina? But didn't Kara say that she never had a boyfriend until now? But what about the guy who just came in?' Millie wondered.
She looked around and found that Mike was missing in that room. She cursed at her stupid daughter one more time for arranging the marriage without even consulting with them first.
To make it worse, she agreed that the marriage will happen in two weeks. And in those two weeks, only four days were left right now. Millie hit her aching chest slightly to ease the pain. She closed her eyes and took two deep breaths.
All that was happening around her recently made her age very fast and took a toll on her health. Looking at Millie's pale face, Kara went inside and brought a glass of Almond milk to drink. She hoped that this would help calm her nerves.
"I have got you some milk. You look too pale. Are you feeling unwell? Can I examine you?" Kara asked worriedly.
Kara felt that it was all her fault. She was young at that time when he decided to adopt Dina. She thought she did not think all of this through when she made that decision.
But she doesn't regret bringing Dina with her. She may not be the best mother in the world but she loves Dina so much that she could even sacrifice her life for her.
"No, no... I am fine. It's just that it's all too much for me to take in. I am also getting on with my age. And the shocks that I received after coming here made me a little speechless," Millie responded but she took the milk from Kara's hand without rejecting it.
She immediately drank the whole glass in one go without any break. As there were only two of them in the house with Mike already left to get the things that Kara asked him to buy. Kara awkwardly looked at Millie as she did not know what she should talk to her now.
Kara found that making a normal conversation with Millie now seems highly impossible. Especially after Millie heard about everything that they spoke until now.
"Please don't mind me asking this. But how did you come to know that Dina is with us?" Kara asked Millie.
"About that…" Millie hesitated and did not look Kara in her eyes.
'I can definitely not tell her that they came to know about Dina through luck. Because until a couple of days back, they didn't even know that Dina is still alive,' Millie took a deep breath.
"We hired a private investigator and found out about Dina," Millie lied to Kara.
To make it more convincing and stop Kara from questioning her any more, Millie said to her,
"Whatever it may be, you should have informed us before taking Dina away from the hospital. I am not saying, we are not at fault for not knowing that the child was alive before we left. Still, that does not allow anyone to take advantage of that and abduct our child."
When Millie finished saying that, tears streamed down from Kara's eyes. Millie started to feel guilty the minute she saw Kara crying.
