Mel stands beside Bella , crying onto her shoulder, as her parents were lowered into their grave.
After she lost consciousness and Bella found her, she had called the police. The police couldn't find anything that could have caused their death. No strangulation, nor gunshots. The cause of their death was a mystery. Though they we're still looking into the case.
After the service, people came towards Mel, telling her how sorry they were for her loss. All her friends from school were there, looking into her crying form in pity.
Even Ava was sober, dressed in a black flared gown that actually got to her knees.
Mel could no longer take it anymore. Their sorry's wouldn't bring her parents back.
She was tired of hearing the same word from everybody. She had lost her family and there was nothing she, or they could do to change that.
"I want to leave." Mel whispered hoarsely to Bella, holding onto her black dress tightly.
Bella nodded at her in understanding. She picked up their things, wrapping her arms around Mel she walked up to her parents.
"Mom, dad, we're leaving."
"Okay honey. We're so sorry Mel. You don't deserve this. We'll get the adoption papers ready soon." Bella's mom said, wiping tears away from her eyes.
Both families had been closed, having lived beside each other for years.
Bella's parents had taken permission from Mel's relatives to adopt her a few days ago. Bella had been overjoyed by the news. She wanted to help Mel as much as she could. Mel's parents had been her second parents. Their death caused great pain to her. She quickly caught the tear that rolled down her cheeks, trying her best to be strong for Mel.
Mel nodded her head at Bella's mother, still holding tightly onto Bella's dress like that was the only thing giving her strength.
"And Bella, take your brother with you. We still have a lot of things to finis up here." Bella's father said?'c trying to avoid Mel's eyes 'cause he knew there was nothing he could say at this moment to make her feel whole.
Bella nodded quietly, signaling a sulking Jason to her.
He walked quietly over to her. Th e three of them got into Bella's car and she drove quietly to their home.
She parked her car at the front of her house. Looking outside the window. The woods behind their houses looked different today. It called more attention than their houses. Everything looked different. The trees looked dead. The autumn leaves which had fallen from the trees looked even more dead than they usually did. She could tell that with Mr. and Mrs. Morris gone, this place will never be the same. Mel's home will just be a house. A house that used to be filled with laughter and life, but is now filled with nothing else but the reminder of death.
"Bella"
She was snapped out of her thoughts by Mel's timid voice.
"Yeah?"
"I wanna go to my house."
Bella gasped. Mel has refused to even look at her house for the past week. She had been curled up in Bella's bed, crying her self to sleep and waking up screaming. It was more than shocking to hear her say she wanted to go to her house.
"Are you sure?" Bella asked worriedly.
"Yes. I-I'm sure."
Bella nodded, turning to he backseat and giving her brother keys to their house.
Jason took the keys , not taking his eyes of Mel.
"I'm sorry for your loss." He said in a quiet voice that held so much emotion.
Mel turned to face him. There was something about the way he said those words. The same words other people said, yet it sounded so different coming from him. It sounded so genuine. He wasn't saying it because he had to, he was saying it because he truly was sorry.
She smiled at him before whispering a "thank you J"
He nodded at her before leaving the car to their house.
Mel and Bella unlocked their doors, stepping out of the car.
Bella inhales the fresh smell of timber that was ever present. It provided a little sense of comfort. For it was one thing that had not changed. It was almost dark out, making the deserted road look scarier than it normally is.
"Shall we?" Bella asked, turning to Mel.
Mel fiddled with her fingers, whispering.
"I wanna do this alone."
"What? Are you crazy? I'm not going to let you do this alone." Bella cried out in frustration.
"Bella please. I have to. Please let me do this."
She pleaded, tears filling her vision.
Bella sighed , scratching her forehead before nodding.
"Call me if you need me." She said to Mel.
Mel nodded. Turning and walking in the direction of her house, she gulped before opening the front door.
Everything looked the same. The mail scattered messily across the kitchen aisle. Her mother's blue sweater hung limply over the brown couch.
She put her hands over her mouth to hold on the sob that threatened to come out. She walked through all the rooms in the house, except the basement and her parents room. She wasn't ready to be in the basement again. She wasn't sure if she'll ever be ready. She had seen her parents dead body there. It would take a lot of courage for her to step into that room again.
She held the door knob to her parents room, opening it slowly. The white wooden door creaked as she carefully opened it, like she was afraid it would break.
A storm of emotions came crashing down on her as she took in all of her parents belongings. Her father's favorite book laid peacefully on the nightstand beside her mother's purse.
She closed her eyes, trying to control her breathing.
She opened her eyes when her emotions were in check again. She slowly looked through everything in the room. Trying to recall every memory she had of every object in the room.
She had spent about thirty minutes there already. It was already dark out. She decided to head over to Bella's house. As she was about to leave, a strong wind whipped the door close. She quickly turned to the window, almost screaming, thinking she saw someone in the room with her but it was just her father's suit jacket hung on the closet door.
She turned on her phone light, hands reaching for the door knob before a dent in the wall caught her attention.
She moved closer to it, placing her hands on it she realized it wasn't the wall. It felt like steel but it was painted the same color as the wall. She wondered what her parents had kept inside.
She pulled on it for while, alimony giving up until it finally opened. She pointed her phone light into the mall compartment. All that was inside was a rectangular box. She took it out, placing it on the bed.
She expected it to be filled with a lot of dust, but it was surprisingly clean.
She opened up the box, finding a thick piece of paper with letters and numbers curved into a semi circle. Yes and no written at both corners. There was also a tear shaped object made of wood, with a magnifying glass in the middle.
She squinted at it, trying to figure out what it was.
Her eyes popped out in realization. It was a Ouija board. She had heard about it last Halloween. It was supposedly a way to communicate with people who were dead. Her mind flashed to her parents. Could she actually talk to her parents with this?
She shook her head, wondering why she would even think of using it. But it wouldn't hurt to try though. It probably wouldn't work.
She decided to try it once.
She placed the tear shaped object on the middle of the board, sucking in a deep breath.
"Hello. Is anyone there?" She called out, her voice echoing slightly in the dark empty house.
"Mom? Dad? Are you hear? Is there anything you want to tell me?"
She waited for a few seconds, but nothing happened. She sighed
"This is stupid." She said to herself.
As she was about to stand up, she heard the creaking of the door behind her.
She slowly turned her head to the side. Her heart rate increasing.
She felt a ghost of a wind sweep pass her from the direction of the door.
"Who's there?" She asked in a shaky voice.
She quickly stood up, pointing her phone light toward the door. She couldn't see anything there.
Suddenly, her hand was pulled to the board, hands on the tear shaped object, she watched in awe and fright as her hand moved to two letters. 'H' 'I'
She gulped. By now she was visibly shaking. This was what she wanted right? To talk to her parents? But at that moment, all she could think about was getting out of there.
She tried to pull her hand away, but it felt like someone, something was pulling it back.
Tears gathered in her eyes.
"Please let me go." She cried out.
She watched once again as her hand moved in its own accord.
'I'
't'
's'
'm'
'o'
'm'
It spelled out.
She gasped out.
"Really? Is it really you mom?"
She watched as her hand moved to the corner of the board where 'yes' was spelt out.
She let out a sob of joy.
"Mom. I miss you guys so much."
'W'
'E'
'M'
'I'
'S'

She smiled, all fears forgotten.
Her hands moved again.

She replied.
She had been blinded by her want to communicate with her parents. And that had led to her destruction.
