The bitter truth

Sam was sitting on a chair in a round table. Eyes fixed on the photo of her mother that he held firmly in his hands. His eyes were red probably because he had cried all night yesterday. Despite all of the crying, the sadness in his heart showed no signs of vanishing. Instead, with each fleeting moment his heart was being enveloped by sadness more and more.

"For how long are going to stare at the photo? She's dead now. No point in grieving now. She's gone. She will never come back to life no matter how much you keep wailing." spat the man with a curt tone.

The man was sitting in the nearby stairs. He had a black hair with fair complexion and was somewhat around 45 years old. He was quite handsome given his age.

At the moment, he was completely drunk. There were about 5 to 6 bottles of wine scattered here and there. He was still holding another bottle. Just when Sam turned around to say something, the man gulped down the entire bottle and reached for another one.

"At least don't drink for few days dad. Don't you have emotions. Okay, I get that you were never on good terms with mom but you did love her, didn't you? So can't you grieve for your lover for just one day and stop drinking?" said Sam in a dejected tone.

After hearing those words his expression changed albeit for a short while. Then he slowly started standing up with the bottle of wine in his hand and started speaking, "Don't act as if your own mother had died, you piece of trash."

For a moment Sam thought that he had misheard him.He thought may be he was trying to joke. He wasn't thinking rationally at that moment. Otherwise,he wouldn't have conlcuded such words as a mere joke. He replied in a slightly irritated tone, "That's why I told you not to drink too much. See now you are spouting nonesense."

"This is not nonesone. This is the one and only truth. I hadn't spoken this before because Elaina had forbidden me from saying so. But since she's gone I think I should tell you in detail." He spoke as if he was enjoying where the conversation was headed towards.

Sam said what he said earlier because he thought his father was joking and tried to brush it off. But now when he saw his father's expression, he knew that he wasn't lying. He kept staring at his father's face without saying anything.

William took this as a sign to continue." You know that your mother had gone to study medicine in Kath town, right? After about 4 years of study and two years of internship in a hospital , she returned to Alauna. I was very excited that I will be seeing her after 6 long years. We had also promised to marry after she returned. I was overflowing with joy. But all that shattered when I saw her returning with a child in tow. I was shocked. I wasn't able to perceive what was in front of my eyes. After seeing that I returned home without even greeting her. I locked myself in my room just sitting alone beside the bed for days without eating and sleeping. I refused to meet anyone. Elaina used to come every day and said that she would explain everything to me. But I refused to meet her."

He sighed deeply and continued.

"But you know that she is more stubborn than me, right. Eventually I gave up and agreed to meet her. Then she explained me that she had adopted you from the hospital where she did her internship due to some complicated circumstances. But she never told what had actually happened. This is all what had happened. Now are you satisfied, my son??" He put extra effort in saying the word "my son".He gave a teasing smile after his last remark.

(This man is lying, right? This is not true, right? No way it's true. She always loved me and it was not something fake. It was a genuine love. She loved me as any another mother would love her child.) These sort of thoughts were going on, on his mind.

His father then started walking towards the door. With a bottle of wine in his one hand, he clumsily opened the door with his other. He then suddenly stopped and turned around to face Sam.

" Kath Town Royal Hospital. This is the place where Elaina worked for two years as intern and picked you up. If you want to know more about what happened there and about your real parents then go there." With those parting words, William closed the door leaving Sam with his thoughts in complete disarray.
