Chapter 8: Mutual Regret

~ Matsukawa's POV ~

Yesterday my head was all over the place and today is the day that I find out what actually happened and why Hanamaki ditched me, but first I have to get ready.

Since I woke up late I only had time to brush my teeth and brush my hair when usually I would also take a shower. I was way more tired than usual but that must be because I went to sleep late last night, I was up thinking about some pretty pointless stuff now that I remember. Anyway after doing all that I got dressed, threw on my uniform and grabbed something to eat from the kitchen. I put my shoes on and walked out ready to go to morning practice.

On my way there I decided to speak to Hanamaki after practice was over because I didn't want to somehow ruin the mood we always in the morning - which was always caused because of Oikawa's overbearing personality.

When I got there everything was like usual except for the fact that Hanamaki was more quiet and was trying to subtly avoid me for some reason. I ignored it and just did what I had to do.

By the time practice was over me and Makki haven't said a thing to each other. I went into the locker room to change and spotted Makki in the corner getting changed, I went up to him,

''Hi Makki! I know this may not be my business but why weren't you at the park yesterday?''

He didn't say anything and kept changing into his uniform while I stood there waiting for an answer that will probably never come. Suddenly he turned around to face me and I could see he was upset about something,

''Are you o-''

''You should know why I'm so upset! NOW LEAVE ME ALONE!'' he snapped back at me in a cold tone then continued with what he was doing.

I was left speechless and confused at what just happened. Some people gave us looks but I didn't pay any mind, instead I walked back to my locker to finish putting on my uniform.

The rest of the day went by like that. He didn't speak to me, didn't look at me and didn't even come near me. I was upset obviously but what he told me kept re-playing in my head: 'You should know why I'm so upset!'. I had absolutely no clue what he was talking about. At first I thought it was because of what I had done that time at the park but we already talked that out and he forgave me, so it must be something else... but what?

I racked my brain for a possible answer but nothing came to mind.

~ Hanamaki's POV ~

I can't believe he would do it twice and look confused when I told him it was his fault that I was upset! I thought he would know but I guess he didn't realize or is trying to avoid the subject and play all innocent hoping I would forgive him again. Well it won't happen!

I think the only person who could help me right now is Oikawa...

''Hey Makki-chan!'' perfect timing.

''Hey Oikawa...''

''I know something bad happened so spill. I don't like seeing you sad.'' he put an arm around me then hugged me tightly.

I started crying and I didn't know why, Oikawa was also surprised but stayed silent and gave me time to collect myself. After some minutes of me sobbing in his arms he pulled back and looked into my eyes,

''You don't need to tell me if you don't want to...'' he had a warm smile on his face that showed how much he really cared. I couldn't leave him hanging so I decided I would tell him.

''...Basically, I wanted to meet up with Mattsun and tell him how I feel. When the time came for us to go he said he needed to go to the bathroom and so I waited for him. He was taking too long and I went to check up on him, and that's when I saw him talking to that girl he was on a date with at the park,'' Oikawa gasped but didn't interrupt me, ''so I got jealous and ran away. I wanted to call you but I didn't want to bother you again.''

''Oh my god honey... are you okay? Do you need me to teach him a lesson, cause I won't stand by and watch you get your heart broken like this!''

''No it's fine Oikawa, I'll be fine. I've been ignoring him the whole day anyways.'' Oikawa hugged me again but this time not as tight,

''Just let me know if you need anything else, okay?''

''Will do! Now I have to get to my next class before the bell rings, see ya at practice!'' I waved to him and he waved back. After the talk with him I went to my last class for the day, I knew that Mattsun was in that class as well but at this point I didn't care. He did try to talk to me throughout the lesson but I ignored him.

\\ Time Skip - Two Weeks Later //

It's been around two weeks since I've last spoken to him and I really him, believe it or not. I miss all the fun times we had together and how he would make me laugh when I was feeling down. The team has been noticing the separation between me and him and asked some questions that I couldn't answer because Oikawa was always there to stop them. I'm really lucky to have someone like Oikawa as my friend, he always cared for me and listened to me when I needed to vent.

I don't deserve him.

~ Matsukawa's POV ~

The last two weeks have been boring and uneventful. Kindaichi and Kunimi picked up on my strange behaviour but didn't ask any questions. While we were talking at lunch they suddenly stopped and looked at me,

''So, what exactly happened between you two? You've been very distant and it's throwing everybody off.'' Kunimi said while biting into his apple.

''Uuuugghhh, it's a long story. But basically I was meant to meet up with him and he didn't come so the next day I asked him why and he said that 'I should know why he's upset' and naturally I had no clue why because I don't remember doing anything bad. And now he has been ignoring me and I really miss him...'' I sighed and dropped my head onto the table.

''Why don't you ask Oikawa why he's ignoring you, I mean they've been hanging out a lot these past weeks. He most likely knows.'' Kindaichi said and Kunimi made a 'mhm' sound.

''I know but do you think Oikawa will tell me that easily? I personally don't.''

''That's t-'' but Kindaichi interrupted him mid-sentence,

''Then why don't we come up with a plan and tell Oikawa about it. Then maybe he'll agree and in the end you to can finally talk again, also don't think we don't know that you have a massive crush on him.'' I groaned in embarrassment while Kunimi and Kindaichi were laughing at me.

''...I guess that could be a good idea but the problem is whether Oikawa will actually agree or not, but first let's make up a plan!'' Kindaichi was proud of himself for coming up with that idea and we could both tell.

After ten minutes we came up with a good-enough plan that we would propose to Oikawa in hopes that he'll help us. The bell rung and before we could all go we agreed on doing it the next day since it was Friday.
